Ohh, states G-0 steppings will require a BOIS update.

I wonder how that will work - I mean if you get a board with an older bios, will it boot OK with a newer chip so the bios can be updated (assuming a newer bios is available).

No idea until they hit the shelves, some boards are more picky than others, and some may have already had the bios update ready for shipping.

If i am wrong, then what are the benefits now? Don't worry about what can be gained next year though as im sure the technology will be utilised in the near future. When it is utilised, the price will be a 3rd of what they are now.
A lot of the games coming out this year will be very much multithreaded, as already said Alan Wake is one, but another (which i'm very much looking forward to ^^) is BioShock, which as discussed in a recent interview has iirc, around 6 different threads and will benefit very much from Quad-core =). It is on track to be released 21st August in US and 24th August in EU.

Not to mention the posibilities in 'normal' games ! Think, Fraps on one core, WoW on another, the previous night's Fraps being encoded to wmv/divx as you record the night's all important boss kill, and then to top it off a 1080p movie playing on your 2nd monitor!

It makes it around £12 cheaper than overclockers when you count the Hexus free shipping.

It may be a good idea for us to monitor current stock levels here (for those vendors that show current stock levels) so we can guesstimate when suppliers have new stock.

I guess we'll have to wait and see on that one, but one would think that a cooler chip (lower TDP) would equate to better overclocking. Or maybe I have that wrong?

I hope the naming isn't an indication of (overclocking) performance (no pun intended).

That sounds like confirmation of the rationale i mentioned earlier
It also has meant poorer ocing in the past when intel has changed stepping like this., hopefully not but ???
    .

    It implies a sophistacation where:-
    1) early adopters of product are more likely enthiusiasts - so high overclocks carry more weight, get the product talked about, raising it's profile.
    2) Having established profile will be adopted by a wider market, corporate etc., to whom overclocking isn't a priority, but being able to tout a drop in electrical & temp spec is.
    3) 2) may also allow a less stringent quality threshold giving higher yeilds & a recovery of margin lost in stage 1.

Hopefully i have just outlined a conspiracy theory & they continue to clock well.

Nice price at present from Scan, but I'm still gonna wait for the July 22nd price drops from Intel ($530 > $266).
Nice, hopefully a quad in my new PC then when the price drop.
