Can't boot from CD - Asus P5K Deluxe

My friend has just phoned me to say that he's built his new system (QX6600, P5K Deluxe, 2GiB, 320Gb, Tagan 480W, etc) but can't boot from his IDE CD-RW drive. He has it plugged into the IDE channel on the board and the BIOS detects the drive but it doesn't show up in the boot options.

I've searched the net for answers but can't find anything to help.

Is there anyone there who has this board that could possibly check BIOS settings and check that he hasn't missed something obvious?

Has he got the master/slave jumpers right?

Edit: forget that idea, if it sees it in the bios.

Is the cd/dvd that he is trying to boot from definitely bootable?

In the boot options, is it showing as something else. My NEC showed as a number I think.

I'll check with him although I do know that the jumper settings are correct and a WinXP CD should be bootable - although I suggested he checked with a Win98 CD just in case the CD was duff.

What about BIOS settings for the Marvell chipset? Is there anything else that could be missed?

The marvel thing is just one of the LAN controllers and that one is connected to the PCI-E bus.

If the bios is detecting it, but it isnt showing up in the boot options, then he might need to clear the cmos.

Try updating the bios as well while he is doing it.

I got a very similar problem , put window xp cd in to the dvd drive and it read the cd for a while . After that I got a message saying : " cdboots couldn't find NTLDT".

He's sorted it now. Not sure what he did (or maybe didn't want to admit what it was!) but problem resolved anyway.
