ikea are pretty good. I go to local companies to get computer desks. That way you can actually try before you buy.
www.vikingdirect.co.uk (or is it viking-direct?)
Ikea sold me a great one, 2 piece in an L shape to fit round a corner of my room, allows me plenty of depth to comfortably have a 19" CRT in there. Not too expensive either iirc.
If you want a really nice desk though, try 2nd hand from an antiques store. I went round some recently and there was some beautiful stuff going for not too high prices, original carved oak with leather inlays and all sorts. Well worth a look.
[quick edit - all the antiques dealers aren't very happy atm because they're being forced to export all their stuff abroad. Hence they have huge list prices, but if you actually go in and ask they slash the price very quickly just so there's a chance it'll be used instead of shipped out to furnish some rich guy's 14th office or something. These guys really care about their antiques, they're also an investment, so if you fancy something go and ask. And yes, that was WAAAAAAAAAAAY off topic ]

Ikea. That's almost exactly what I've got.
... or make your own - I made a couple of very nice corner desks (just the tops supported by heavy duty brakets x 6) made from Oak veneered MDF (about 1" thickness - very heavy) and just jigsawed a nice quarter of a circle for the front shape and a cup-sized circle out of the back (for cables) ... it's a bit like buying PCs, you might get a half-decent one if you buy it, but you will only get precisely what you want if you make it yourself !Originally Posted by brammers
BTW - 6' by 10' sheet of high quality Oak-veneered MDF only cost me £56 from the local timber yard/shop (not B&Q !!) so all in all the tables cost approx £70 for both, with plenty left over for shelves (for speakers/books etc..) - make sure you buy plenty of sand-paper to smooth off the fronts/tops (and some bees-wax to finish off)
not that d.i.y ish im afraid in fact im dangerous with a tool
i got one from pcworld, not the same as what your looking for, but it's a corner unit and huge!! only about £70 if i remeber. easy to put together to.
I got one of theseOriginally Posted by psalliss
It turned out bigger than I anticipated, (yes i did measure first!! ) tbh I wasn't that impressed with the quality. if I wasn't so lazy I could have built something similar for a lot less
cheers woody, i think the one im looking at may actually a bit bigger than i need. it would take up a little too much of my room, im going to have to measure up carefully. the glass one is nice but would prefer wood
it's suprising how big a desk can look in a room especially when all the kit is installed!
a definate disadvantage of glass is trying to conceal wires........
i know measures up and i wouldnt have any room at the end left. its quite a long narrow room.
found this one at mfi which is a possibility
