You shouldn't have any trouble, which Sonata is it? I checked the Sonata II and III and both are fine for microATX but if your not sure then an email to Antec would be the easiest solution but I'm 99% sure you will be fine.

It's the original Sonata! It's been a while since I upgraded my machine...

They use the same screw postions as ATX, just not the last set of 3 so you only use 9 screws

I had the first Sonata as well and it had a mATX board in fine *my 2p*

(Although the board was some godawful MSI socket A budget variety - that's the last time I'll scrimp on the motherboard)

Re: £200 to spend for upgrade

    Hi,

Thanks to everyone that has replied. I wondered if the components listed below would be much of an improvement over the 2 systems suggested so far? (Prices from Ebuyer)

    1 x ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio AGP PCI-E ATX Motherboard £37.99

    1 x Kingston 2GB KIT (2X1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 CL5 Non Ecc 1.8V £35.00

    1 x Intel E4400 Socket 775 2x2.00GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £77.25

    1 x MSI 8600GT 256MB OverClocked Edition Dual DVI HDTV PCI-E Graphics Card £64.99

Also I'm thinking of switching to Vista, would I have any problems with this set up if I went for the 64-bit version?

Will my 380W power source be okay ?

Would there be any point going for an ATA150 HD over my existing ATA133?

    Thanks

Re: £200 to spend for upgrade

No if your going to replace your Hard drve then move to SATA much faster Although saying that you may need a molex to sata power adapter as I wouldnt expect your PSU to have SATA connecters

Personally if it was me on that budget I would go for an AMD system as I suggested earlier in the thread and DDR2 PC26400 (800Mhz) Memory, on ebuyer you can get some OCZ for £45.

Also if your upgrading your graphics to PCIe then the will be no need to get a motherboard with an obsolete AGP slot!

If you really want to go for an Intel processer then may I suggest either a P31, P35, G31 or G33 chipset as these will support the newer 1333Mhz FSB CPUs and will allow for greater upgrade potential. The are a few around the £50 mark in both ATx and uATX formats.

Sorry, not sure if I was clear, I currently have a SATA 133 HD, would there be much point upgrading to SATA 150 drive?

    cheers

Re: £200 to spend for upgrade

Personally I would wait and see what the new performance was like with the upgraded MB, RAM, CPU and Graphics and then if you thought the HDD was holding you back upgrade then, and why only to SATA150 why not SATA300??? Price differance is negligable at best!

So to answer your question, no possible reason to upgrade to SATA150 possibly some merit in going to SATA300 but I would wait and see if you really need to before splashing more cash since you have quite a tight budget already!

Okay I am quite keen on the Intel route. What about this motherboard from Gigabyte ?

    Any recommendations on memory?

    cheers

Re: £200 to spend for upgrade

Motherboard looks alright, has everything you need I would imagine. No idea how it overclocks but since that shouldn't be needed for what you want to do, that shouldn't put you off.

Memory wise I would go for this probably if I was buying from eBuyer OCZ Platinum probably cant get much better for that price.

Re: £200 to spend for upgrade

well as it supports 1333mhz FSB you will be able to overclock an e2410 to 2.6GHz without overclocking the motherboard

Now why didn't I think/realise that... I will blame the long day at work and the hazardous chemicals I work with... Yeah that should do it!

Do you even need a graphics card?

The use of this PC as stated in your first post suggests you not really working with anything graphically heavy.
