    Laptop RAM recommendations

I'm looking for 4GB of RAM for my Dell XPS m1330 in the UK. Can I do better than this for the price (including delivery):
    Amazon.co.uk: OCZ PC2-6400 SO DIMM 800MHz Mobile Series 4GB RAM Kit 5-5-5-15 - OCZ2M8004GK: Electronics & Photo

I know it's PC6400 and my laptop will only use it at PC5300 but it's cheaper than most PC 5300 kits.

    Cheers,
    Kreeeee

Thats a good price. You could get crucial for £60ish but that would be PC5300 and the PC6400 may come in handy later if you wanted to sell it.

I guess the only advantage with the crucial is you will get it soon. Amazon suggests 2 - 5 weeks..

Will the timing change when run in PC5300 like my desktop DDR2 RAM?

I thought it was a good price for a great manufacturer but it's always worth checking

    Re: Laptop RAM recommendations

I'd imagine the timings with stay at 5-5-5-15 or -18 when you put it in which is typical for PC5300 laptop ram.

It should do it all automatically though yes. I don't think you have any way of changing them.

If you're running vista on your m1330 post up if there is much difference as I've been thinking about getting 4GB for mine

Yeah it's vista. I only have the 32 bit version though (for compatibility) but with a 128MB GFX card I shouldn't lose too much of the RAM capacity (3.6-3.7GB?) and still maintain dual DDR support/performance.

    Re: Laptop RAM recommendations

In Vista 32bit you will only be able to see 3.25GB (ish) of your 4GB its an addressing issue, if you had a 64bit OS this wouldn't be an issue. Not sure if your graphics will take some of the 3.25GB or use up some of the unaddressed (at least for standard tasks) memory.

    Re: Laptop RAM recommendations

Thanks for the information. I plan to use Vista 64bit when the drivers and apps are sorted out for it so hopefully the 4GB will be fully utilised then.

Coding Horror: Dude, Where's My 4 Gigabytes of RAM?

3.5ish GB should be fine for me, and I get to keep that vital 3% performance boost that dual channel gives

Edit: can't I just enable PAE to see the 4GB?
