NAS box Help

OK, I need some networked storage. I was thinking about 3TB for a nas box. This will free my pc from the need to have multiple HDD and i can share data with other PC's.

Now read/write transfer speed will be important. I was looking at NAS Devices the more faster they are the more expensive they become.

So i was reading some where about making a PC NAS BOX, is this possible? What are the advantages? Price i guess is a major one, i've got lots of spare parts so bulding a PC nas box is cheaper and i suppose it shall be faster too?

I see the board supports raid, i'll use that can freenas support that?

I just want a fast nas box.

Pretty much any distro will be a responsive NAS box with that.

How would using Ubuntu benfit me SiM? Will it be compatible with windows networked PC's?

The only advantage that using a fully fledged Linux distro will have is the flexibility to easily add extra services to your NAS via a package manager. FreeNAS is better if you want to keep things simple though.

Yup. Its compatible with pretty much anything. I set up one recently. I haven't had the time to finish setting it up... I need to find out how to do auto shutdown and I need to set up a torrent client... but its been perfect as a nas so far...

and maybe I'll try to make it cod4 server too

There is some concern over the reliability because it is a beta... Beta RAID is not a great idea imo... I think that Ubuntu is more reliable and more widely tested/used/supported

There are stable versions of FreeNAS too

I've been running the stable release for almost 6 months without any issues at all.

As has been said, Blackmage, your suggested system is more than adequate.

Most of the FreeNAS specific stuff is the user interface and such. It uses FreeBSD 6.3 which is a fairly stable base for the lower level stuff like RAID, although Linux software RAID is more flexible.
