Why don't you run your existing PC as a server and see how it pans out?
On an entirely unrelated note, I'm trying to organise some events for the LSS steam group. *hint hint*

Hmm, pretty much what i expected tbh. Thanks anyway Basically don't bother unless I have 20MB internet? Guess that's that idea crossed off ^^.
Ahh, i see. Only thing is, the sites i've looked at, the SDSL lines cos like £150 a month.
yeah, I'm glad there is someone here that knows what they are talking about
Cheers, taktak, so basically it's a no ^^
unless you move to a better location then no...
with good ADSL you can get *semi* good uploads (i.e. sat on top of the exchange)... but generally they are pants... hence why there is a distinctive lack of good free UK servers for games... (too expensive to run a good one...)
but things may get better with the introduction of FTTH and FTTC.
Basically, the UK broadband industry is rotten to the core. Even if you had the bandwidth, your ISP would probably whip out a fair usage policy (read: We haven't paid for enough bandwidth but won't admit that our service is flawed) and spank you with it.
UK Broadband is actually fairly good. Try running your own servers in the US or Canada - there's no competition at the local level, and all the majors explicitly forbid it.
Atleast here there's a handful that fully allow it. It's just they don't tend be the cheapest.
EntaNet, Andrews&Arnold, Zen, Plusnet and a few others.
Actually if you want a reality check go checkout broadband prices in Australia then come back here and moan about the UK market. Pay special attention to the allowances.
FWIW I've been running a server on ADSL for 7 years now, hosting email and a couple of sites. I've recently moved most of the services off to a VPS though, mainly as when I'm away from home I'd rather not worry about the server being up. It's still there kicking away as I use it for LAN storage so might aswell host a few things as backup & it's nice being able to access anything on it anywhere in the world.
Yeah, but this is for gaming purposes.
