    Crucial Ballistix Tracer Faulty...

Anyone else have a matched pair of DDR2 Crucial Ballistix Tracer ram go faulty?

I had some for about 12 months that went faulty - completely died and had to be sent back for a replacement. This second set has lasted 2 - 3 months and is also faulty (PC crashes regularly, while other memory the PC is 100% reliable uptime of weeks etc)...

Is this a common occurance? Can I request "normal" ram as a replacement from Crucial, rather than having to get the flashy light ram?

    Thanks

    Josh

I can't remember where I read it but the was some kind of incompatability with the memory and a chipset may have been P35 but can't remember for sure.

You could always ask for a refund stating that it has failed twice and you have lost confidence in the product, though they may give you current market price rather than what you paid over a year ago! Might be worth a try.

    Re: Crucial Ballistix Tracer Faulty...

The LED circuit shouldn't make a difference. It was a common problem with the micron D9 stuff, our theory for it happening was this:

    http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/hardw...ballistix.html

The newer stuff has clipless heatspreaders I believe, which solve that problem. The D9 stuff seemed to die with regularity whoever manufactured the kit that used it though, it was the trade off for the loopy speeds it did.

Do you know if the modules are single or double sided?

I believe that the retailer can deny you this unless you have had the same fault three times. Otherwise it is there choice. (I know this cos my brothers phone had to be sent back twice, and they would not allow him a refund or exchange of phone, and this is what they said)

    Re: Crucial Ballistix Tracer Faulty...

These are single sided and it appears as though it's stuck on properly. I'll be sending it back - definitely don't want the same again, so I'll ask for some normal crucial ram hopefully they'll be okay.

Crucial's service is excellent, but both sets of Ballistix I've had have been dreadful from a reliability pov.

    Re: Crucial Ballistix Tracer Faulty...

My non tracer crucial ballistix died a month ago, one of the sticks became faulty, this was after like four months of use, never overclocked either, wasnt very too impressed, in contrast to my crucial ram in my old rig, which is still working as new after 5 years, quality must have slipped....

    Re: Crucial Ballistix Tracer Faulty...

I've had many dead sets of Ballistix and Tracers.

In the link that GSte gave above, I received a brand new set of D9 Tracers and removed the heat spreaders right away, and they are still alive despite much torture.

2 of my sticks lasted 5 days (ballistix tracer), replacement ones have the LEDs, but they don`t do a lot........2 rows of lights compared to one, but limited activity.
