why do you want 8GB of ram, do you do a lot of rendering/video/3d work?
If its going to be just everyday use then you really dont need it and a 2 x 2B kit will more than suffice.
Ah Biscuit, you don't understand what a greedy boy I am ...
To be honest, first of all I don't wanna trap myself cause this board only has two banks.
If future applications / games require more RAM, then I would have bought the wrong modules with 2 x 2 GB.
And with Vista it really does make a difference if you have 4 or 8 GB installed.
Yes, I'm planning to dig deeper into video editing as well. As far as I know that's very resource hungry.
Never mind the extra, when you need it - you got it.
On the other hand, hmm ... haven't we reached somehow a dead end with socket 775 ?
There won't be a 32nm Core2Duo/quad.
I mean, all investment in the new generation of CPUs will force us to abandon our complete system anyway.
Don't really feel like spending so much cash on a cutting edge PC again cause my current one runs just fine.
That never happened to me ever before since I own PCs, coming to think of it.
I really like Vista and Office 2007, I do.
Have got used to it and find myself better around then ever before.
Never understood this people who stuck on XP like as if it was their life support.
My Wolfy makes no hicups whatsoever, coping whatever I demand from him like a little King Kong.
Using my PC is a pleasure every day when I flip the switch on. Uuuh those blue LEDs. Don't they look so cool ? Have you notice too that something personal has grown between you and your PC ?
So I thought instead of wasting money on a new system, I just waste my money staying with socket 775 for a while.
Going with the old slogan "never say never" I might get a new system eventually, when some clever software (like usual) shows me that I'm outdated cause it can't be run on mine anymore.
My plan is to get one of those nifty SSD drives as soon as we can look at the prices without fainting.
I do check from time to time but I always have faint afterwards.
Reading about SSD drives gets me going. I get so excited and I even would spend an unreasonable amount of money for my first one, but I wouldn't take a mortgage for it. Never.
So I'll stay faithful to the good old HDD with the spinning platters and stuff.
Once the new SanDisk comes out (maybe in 2 months or so ??), I'll be faithful no more, hehe.
Am I typing too much ? Alright, I'm off now.
Here are the reasons:
1.)Vista is resource hog when compared to XP. Most people do not see the point of getting a new OS and a computer(or even upgrading the latter) when their existing setup does what they need. They have better things to with their money in their honest opinion!
2.)XP still will do almost everything Vista will do and in many cases more efficiently too. Crysis still runs better under DX9 in XP than DX10 in Vista. However with custom settings the games look almost the same but you will get better framerates in XP!!
3.)There are probably legacy applications which work better under XP which people still need to use.
4.)If you have paid money for software it may cost you more if you need to get a version which will work under Vista - this can be a lot of money.
5.)You can make XP look like Vista if you want too. Also many people prefer the look of XP over Vista.
An OS should not be bloated but be as efficient as possible. You are buying a computer to run applications as well as possible NOT the OS!!
The SG05 is listed at £80 on the Scan website:
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=982116
Ok, so PCs which are not strong enough for Vista, use XP because it runs better.
Then I don't get why there are two groups, the XP and the Vista fanboys.
One says the other one is crap, but in reality it's just a matter of performance, right ?
Got it.
It says "Pre Order Item.
Item currently awaiting an ETA."
PS: I'm buying a computer to run my OS (Vista).
Scan said it will come into stock on the 18th:
http://forums.hexus.net/scan-care-he...sugo-sg05.html
They have nothing on the SG06 yet!
CAT ?
CAT the 5th !!
Why do you have a deer on your avatar ? Shouldn't it be a cat ?
Or do you live in Finland ?
And what happened to the other 4 cats btw ?
lol off topic :/
2 x 2GB of ram will be £40-50 which is like a 3rd of what your gunna pay for 8GB and will still be plenty for video rendering and editing... trust me i do a lot of it myself. Unless you already do a lot of it now and your feeling limited by your ram i can assure you 4GB will be enough to last you until your next upgrade whenever that may be.
Remember windows 7 isnt too far away and that seems to have solved many of the shortfalls of windows vista from what i have heard and read (i havent tried it myself though).
Put that money you save from the extra ram in your savings and keep it ready for your next upgrade or something...
A DEER!!?? HMMMPH!! A MOOSE to you sir!!
A Moose fell on top of them.....!
The great quotation about Moose:Another quotation from Monty Python :"[Moose] can fly and [moose] can land,Just not very well."Read this article and its comments to see why Moose are great:" A Møøse once bit my sister ...
No realli! She was Karving her initials on the møøse with the sharpened end of an interspace toothbrush given her by Svenge - her brother-in-law - an Oslo dentist and star of many Norwegian møvies: "The Høt Hands of an Oslo Dentist", "Fillings of Passion", "The Huge Mølars of Horst Nordfink".

Don't be so tense, relax and have some biscuits.
Hmm, yeah that's the premium you have to pay for cutting edge, isn't it ?... 2 x 2GB of RAM will be £40-50 which is like a 3rd of what your gunna pay for 8GB ...
Same like with SSD, if you can't wait - you just pay 10 times more.
Ok, let's talk serious then.... Put that money you save from the extra ram in your savings and keep it ready for your next upgrade or something...
I haven't put myself up-to-date, but if I were to change from socket 775 to 1366, what item would I look at ?
Let's say I can still use ...
- Monitor (DVI)
- Keyboard (USB)
- Mouse (USB)
- PSU (SLI)
- DVD RW (SATA)
- HDD (SATA) - preferable SSD though
- VGA (PCI-E)
- Laser printer (USB) Brother HL-5240L
- Scanner (USB) Canon Lide 200
... but I need to get new ...
- Motherboard
- RAM (DDR3)
- CPU
- CPU cooler
By the way, are there any Micro ATX motherboard for socket 1366 out yet ?
Hmm, but if I prefer Mini ITX, soo I wouldn't have any better choice than 775, right ?
What about the next generation of 32nm CPUs ?
Doesn't Intel's roadmap say that they're in good time for Q4/08 ?
I just imagine how cool it would be to get a Dual or Quad core in 32nm process. Wow !
If I may dream a little further, I would like a Nano ITX motherboard with a Q9550 pre-installed (32nm technology) and 2 x 8GB RAM modules ... with SSD ... and Vista x64 ...
That will never happen, I know ...
not a bad idea... WHERE HAVE ALL MY HOBNOBS GONE!
its not cutting edge though thats the point, its DDR2 which is old technology, along with 775 which is getting ona wee bit too. I know what your saying about their not being any mini ITX 1366 products at the moment and i wouldnt say wait for one but i would say dont go OTT now because speaking from experience, your unlikely to require the extra 4GB.
There was an asus x58 mATX board announced on hexus recently actually but no, no ITX and i doubt there ever will be as its a platform which is really designed for hardcore workstations and multi GPU gaming. You might see a mini ITX varient of the p55 board for the i5 CPUs though.
i think intel are having issues with the 32nm chips at the moment (feel free to correct me) but i wouldnt hold out for anything. Get what you can now (within sensible cost per performance limits) and then worry about upgradign when what you have becomes a problem which i would predict being about a year and a half at least.
Moose:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose
Despite what the article says Moose are definitely better than Elk!!
I believe Moose are eaten in parts of Canadia.
I like Cats too.....!
I shudder to think how that would work...
Anyway, back to topic: if you ever decide to upgrade from this you'll have to throw all that lovely DDR2 ram away and get DDR3 anyway, so why spend the extra on 8GB now? While I agree that it's *unlikely* we'll see a mini-itx 1366 anytime soon, I wouldn't rule it out all together (no doubt with 3 DDR3 slots,if they can somehow cram them on: SODIMMs perhaps?). Even if we get a mini-itx 11whatever-it-is for Core i5, that'll still use DDR3.
Your 775 system is (IMNSHO) more likely to suffer from CPU shortcomings before suffering from "only" 4GB of RAM (iirc you plan on using a dual-core processor rather than a quad, right?), so there's not a lot of point in trying to future-proof your mini-itx now by getting 8GB of RAM!
