Installing a Heatsink/Fan

Well I've ordered a new "FalconRock II" 80MM HSF thing to replace my noisy Coolermaster.

Now, would you recommend taking out the mobo and putting it on a hard surface to replace the HSF (seems an awful lot of effort, dismantling the WHOLE case, just for a new fan set) or would it be OK to apply the necessary pressure whilst it's still in my case?

Specs are in sig, those of you who have an NF7 board your help is especially appreciated

To be honest it would be safer taking the whole lot out and making sure it's all done safely. Annoying indeed

I have never done this but i suppose its important if your too heavy handed.

Well I'll see a) how easily the old one comes off and b) how easily the new one goes on, if I think it's too hard, then the case gets taken apart

I always just lay the case on its side and do it. Don't see the point in taking it out etc, its securely bolted to the case... its aint going anywhere. Suppose it depends how well the case is to work with, but i've always done it that way!

If you do it inside the case, it might be quicker to move the PSU first to give you a little bit more room. I done it that way and now mine is seated pretty well I think.

The thing I'm worried about though is putting the mobo itself under pressure - bending it or something.

Inside the case it's easily accessible.

I'm sure it'll be fine, remember theres no rush to fit it. Just take your time, if you feel you pushing it too far your probably not applying the pressure right!

There's nothing wrong with leaving the mb in the case while changing heatsinks. I've been doing that for 4 years now with no problems. All you have to do, is take your time and be carefull about it all.

With clip heatsinks its a good idea to tip the case over onto its side, I hate doing it upright. I dont see the point in taking the mobo out for a heatsink change. any one using waterblocks I reocommend cutting out chunks of your mobo tray so you can get at the bolts with the side panel off, a lot nicer than havign to take the mobo out. I prefer olt heatsinks as I dont have to tip the case over first.

Well I'm not going to do it with the case standing up! I usually lie it on the floor when doing stuff like this so yeah, thanks for the input guys
