Because I've used it a lot, I like it, (almost) every issue you could possibly have has been had by someone else.
Best of all, it works.
If you need a GUI, then add one after you've installed, or opt for the Desktop version.
There's another thread here about someone looking for a media server, two links in there give you pretty much all you need to know.
Of course there are plenty of distros you can pick from, I can only recommend what I've used and what I like.

I don't really want to find out at my own expense! I'm fed up of this problem.
I just downloaded it again using HTTP. No luck, the check sum was wrong yet again. I checked it against http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/...so-dvd/MD5SUMS using Microsoft MD5 Portable program.
I don't want to consider a netinstall or whatever, I tried a general install and the same thing happened.
I'm yet to download the version of Linux you recommended.
Is the machine you're downloading to OK?
Does it pass memtest and does chkdsk come back clean on the disks?
Dodgy md5's are rare.

I have downloaded it now using my PC and laptop, eliminating the speculative problem that it is down to RAM or HDD.
If you are still intent on using a Debian system (and there is no reason why you shouldn't) consider downloading the minimal install CD http://www.debian.org/CD/netinst/ - less to copy down, less chance of error, and then you can just add the packages you need once you have got it running.

Hello, just thought I would let you know that I used an FTP client to download the HTTP distro and when I checked it with MD5 the sum was correct and a match! I burned it to a DVD and inserted it into the new system. THe disc is working! I am at the stage where I must decide which partition table to use, I'm not sure.. There are a lot of options. What would be best for my project?

Those quotes are rubbish, I've got past that stage. I just want to know which partition table to use.
I'll be posting pictures when it's fully operational (bar supporting external backup).
Those quotes were my way of letting peterb know that I'd already suggested the minimal version.

Well, the documentation will only list the partition table types: The problem is that a default is not selected, the list is rather large... amiga, bsd, dvh, gpt, mac, msdos, pc98, s390, sun, loop.
I presume you're using the AMD64 version, I think that's what you settled on in the end.
