    How do I know if a drive has a single platter or more? Why is single better? Thanks...

    Essentially the larger the platter the faster, in most respects anyway.

    320GB platters (640GB drives and some 1TB drive have them) have been great but now there are 500GB platters floating around. No doubt they will be hard to find though as companies will want to shift old stock too..

    It's a shame you have had trouble with WD as they have been 100% reliable for me over the last 10 or so years. The 640GB AAKS/Caviar Blue or blacks are amazingly quiet and fast
