    Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?

    Wow, that's impressive.

So is it possible to do it on any other board apart from the Asus P6T/Rampage?

Also, is it possible to enable Turbo Boost at the same time as having forced the 21x multiplier, therefore giving you a 22x multiplier under load?

    Thanks again,

    Odai.

21 is the limit on that chip, and its possible on the rampage as thats what i do, altough i can get a 23 multi on the 940.

21 is turbo mode locked on.

I'll give turbo boost and 21x a shot, brb.

EDIT: Just tried it, what he said ^

21 is as high as it'll go.

    Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?

So the 21x multiplier is simply a result of the board forcing the Turbo Boost on 'permanently' on all 4 cores?

I've done a lot of searching, and I can't find any examples of this being possible on any other boards apart from Asus (and EVGA?)..

    Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?

try to think of the chip having a 21 multi, intel get smart and set it to 20 with a fake turbo feature to boost sales. so long as the chip doesnt get to hot then all cores can run in the fake turbo mode.

asus and i dare say other board makers decide enough is enough and allow overclockers to set the max multi for stability reasons, once overclocked the swapping between 20 and 21 multi can cause instability.

    Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?

I can do this with my Foxconn Bloodrage x58 too, grabbed some decent 1600mhz DDR3, knocked the FSB upto 200 so it kept my RAM at 1600mhz, this gave me 4ghz on my i7 920 then to enable the extra x1 on the multiplier, I have to enable EIST and set my CPU Turbo to always on, the other options in this menu are auto or disabled, this gave me a total of 4.2ghz.

I think this is kind of a gift from Intel for enabling EIST which is Intels low power state, speed step techology, which I hate and has always been disabled on other boards ive owned, however foxconn wrote into their bios from p06 upwards, to enable this extra multiplier to be always on, this way even though EIST is enabled, its non effective, but I still get the x1 extra, i.e my system nnever throttles down when its not being used.

Doesnt get anymore stable than this:

So this is possible on the Asus P6T/Rampage, EVGA and Foxconn boards at least. Any one know of any others? Is it possible on the Gigabyte boards (haven't seen any mention of it on google searches).

    Re: Forcing x21 multiplier on i7 920?

Just came across this thread and thought I'd add to it.

I've just fitted water cooling to my rig after a year or so of not F'''ing about with it (work ) and thought i'd start oc'ing again. Last time i looked multiplier was locked to 20 unless turbo mode kicked in, but looks like bios update has changed that.

I've just set this and tested...

    Asus P6T : Bios 1303 .
Multiplier set manually to x21 with Speedstep and turbo mode off.
    Core i7 920, Bloomfield Rev. c0/c1.

CPUz v1.55, Everest and occt all report a x21 multipler under zero load, core speed of 3044 approx. with a Bclock of 145.

Interestingly windows system menu only recognises the increase in cpu speed associated with the higher bclock, the additional x1 from the multiplier change doesnt register: it thinks the cpu is at 2.9GHz
