    lmao, I'm not that poor
but if I shell out £200 on a new quad core (which I plan to do) I at least want a clear choice and it not to be out of date a week later

But if they didn't keep bringing out new stuff and disscontinueing stuff that's not very old then you wouldn't have to buy so much stuff to have the latest suff, reguardless of if it's any better.

Although nVidia are the current kings of this, I saw a few "user reviews" and threads on other places from idiots who upgraded their 8800gt to a 9800gt

Hey how else can they gouge us and keep the profits up?

And think of all thoes progarmmers who'll have to put in a lot more work to write tighter code and cleaner OS's because they will not have computers with the shear computing power to get there baggy bloated code to run at reasonable speeds?

Not forgetting that if it's a year old then it's so out of date that it should come with a zimmerframe

And without the latest hardware you're epeen would be tiny!

Yes I have been considering upgradeing to i5 from my c2d

Then don't! Perhaps Bulldozer will come out by the time you do and you can stay with AMD (or not).

TBH, launch prices tend to be high. I would wait a few weeks until prices and availability have improved.

The cost of the low voltage RAM is very high and as I said before the initial issue with the Core i5 is going to be platform costs not the processor itself. I am hoping the motherboard and RAM prices drop in price soon as this processor is definitely worth recommending over the Phenom II X4 945,955BE and 965BE ATM. Of course the MSI promotion is a good start but it depends on how long they have it for.

TBH, one of the main attractive features of the Phenom II X4 955 has been the fact that it you could use relatively low cost(and decent) motherboards and cheaper RAM(around £100 to £120 for a DDR2 or DDR3 770,785G,790GX or 790X motherboards and 4gb of RAM).

General performance being roughly equal I would prefer not to get an AMD chip - Intel compilers seem way better, but when I was purchasing last time around it was a a choice between the Pentium D and the AMD X2.. so that didn't take much thinking about!

Not sure I can hang on for as long as Bulldozer - or even if it'll be enough to compete - I fear another last generation matching performance to be honest. But then Intel are moving away from my kind of chip too - I want the small, efficient power house, not uber performance at any cost or blooming integrated graphics.. at least, until they become actually useful vector processing units like larrabee.

Well I am sticking with my Q6600 and old 975x based motherboard(I bought the motherboard in late 2006 BTW) for as long as possible. I like SFF PCs so another one would be at least £700+ IMHO and lower power consumption and heat production is useful for such a build. I would rather spend the money on a new wide angle lens and a holiday TBH!!

I would wait until the new 32nm Intel processors come out as these should have lower power consumption.

But not the kind of chip I want - in 32nm you can either get uber performance/high cost/power, or low performance with integrated rubbish graphics. There's no i7 860/Q6600 inbetween equivalent.

well i heard that i can simply replace my i76 920 with a i9 or whatever the next gen cpu is with 8 cores on a x58 board.

my board is very future proof indeed.

The socket 1366 processors are not going to be that cheap in the future as the Core i5 will now inhabit the sub £300 price bracket.

    i9 is uber high end.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
