GPU Upgrade

Hi,

Due to broken GPU, looking at replacing with another nVidia card (that's my preference).

Current specs of importance (as per my profile) are:-

AB9 QuadGT (PCI-E x16)
Corsair HX620 PSU
2 x HDD (500gb, 250gb)
8gb ram

I'm thinking ahead to possible later upgrade, do I stick with 8800/9800 or move on to eg 896MB XFX GTX 260 Black @ £150?

I appreciate these are PCI-E 2.0 cards but are from what I gather backwards compatible.

Forget the GTX260.

Staying with NV, you can get a GTX275 for a little over £150, it's PCI-E 2.0 but will work without issue on PCI-E 1.x motherboards.

Changing your mind for ATI; the HD4890 comes in at a little under £150 and performs about the same as the GTX275.

I don't recommend staying (going back) with the 8800/9800, these are old cards. If you've got the opportunity to upgrade, do it!

You'd be mad not to consider the ATI 5850. Can be had for a shade less than £200 and will be loads faster than the nVidia cards you are looking at...

Depend on how much you're willing to spend, a gts250 which is roughtly the same speed (slightly faster) can be had for under £100 right down to under £80

XFX GTX275 purchased, ta for pointers and confirm backward compatibility - had a look thro cards mentioned and in the end time constraints (replacing a ker-nackered card) made me go with gut feeling.

I don't really understand your quotes there... you've virtually just reinforced what he said. If he's saying "don't be a fanboy", and advises against getting the same as what he has, then he clearly isn't a fanboy.

I agree with him anyway, the GTX 260 was an excellent purchase at one point, as was the GTX 275 but I think right now everything is really swinging in ATI's favour.

I was merely pointing out how rubbish the comment was... I'll work out on the basis of the comment that:-

1. I should go ATi because otherwise I would be a "fanboy" and somehow that would be rubbish.
2. oh look he has a GTX260 so he knows what he's talking about (but hasn't mentioned why not to get similar).
3. he's told me what I should get, not why.

As opposed to yours and others rather more helpful comments, I did indeed start with a preference then look at the ATi offerings, which with more time I probably would have gone with.
