if i get two of these could i run 6 monitors if i dont cross fire them in 1080p hd?
i take it you lose the outputs on the second card when you cross fire them

You can use all 6 outputs and eyefinity while crossfired, that's suppose to be one of the gems with eyefinity. One of the monitors for each card *must* be a displayport monitor (or use a DisplayPort->Other adaptor), however.
See: http://www.amd.com/us/products/techn...eyefinity.aspx
thanks i was just a bit confused if they were cross fired or not.
as for the display port i found these hdmi adaptors £7.48
http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/search/pr...?sku=AV1875106
so if i get this motherboard http://www.tyan.com/product_SKU_spec...&SKU=600000040
and two ati 5850s whould i still be able to run 6 monitors as it says the mobo dont support crossfire? or the gfx card but the gfx card will work just not sure on two for eyefinity or cross fire and 6 monitors.
Apparently Tyan doesn't wanna have crossfire fun on that board: ftp://ftp.tyan.com/video/s7025.pdf
looks like i will just have to make do with one ati 5850. from the compatibility charts i cant find any tyan board that does cross fire either
there are 2 nividi cards that work in sli tho. nVidia Quadro FX4700/nVidia Quadro FX4500 X2 but they cost a fortune.
Just out of interest why do you need so many cores
its for a daw running nuendo 4 and a motu hd192 core system.
I have absolutely no idea what that means. Some sort of professional rendering stuff or whatnot I wager
daw is for digital audio workstation.

Word of warning, I'm 99% sure that dvi-display port adaptor is a "passive" adaptor, so will not work as the required display port monitor with eyeinfinity.
The only relatively cheap "active" adaptor I know of atm is the apple one, which is not that good and has many known issues.

You can spot an active adaptor but the fact that it also has a USB lead which must be pluged in as well (to provide power for it)

Sorry photobucket links broken
your right it wont work with a passive adaptor and i need an active one for eyefinity to work.
there goes another 50 quid
i found this at ebuyer http://www.ebuyer.com/product/188282
cant find anything cheaper than the apple one tho but i dont want that.
looks like i will just have to get the one from ebuyer if i cant find one cheaper somewhere else
But btw. If you really wanted to crossfire was that for the 6 ports or the performance?
Wouldn't a 5970 do if it was the performance you were after?
Since this is for an audio workstation, really, two 5750's (as in, no intensive 3d work) would do the job just as well, iirc you can have two eyefinity desktops across on the two cards and just use the windows software multihead stuff iirc. You could always email AMD for verification.
