unbranded SiI0680A-based card, all drives are spinning fine, and arrays are primary & secondary masters for array 0, primary and secondary slaves for array 1

& system simply wouldn't boot from ANYTHING with the card plugged in, regardless of droves plugged in - e.g. wouldn't boot from CD, plugged into the regular southbridge IDE controller, nor from floppy, with the card plugged in - meaning i couldn't try & re-flash it.

ended up tossing the thing in the sink. will hit maplin for a replacement later

    Fair enough

Mine are a Promise on-board and a Highpoint on-board I think, but I did look into getting a RAID card before I got the board with the Promise on-board and I noticed that most of them only supported one array at once. The cards that supported 2 or more simultaneous arrays were a lot more expensive

Sounds like a dead card - I used to have an unbranded RAID card based on the same chipset and managed (briefly) to get two RAID 0 array on it.
Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

the rocketraid's fitted. windows threw a fit, do i backed up & started again.

    and...

    omg

it just works, it's fast, the management software is not only easier to use, but supports scheduling of array verification, can connect remotely to the array control service, etc etc etc

    buy highpoint!!!

    http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=111198&cks=PRL is what i'm using

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=119239&cks=PRL is the sexy 8-drive version

and yes, it still works fine, no problems at all, so i still think very highly of it. the sii0680a was driving me up the wall with problems, whereas the highpoint really just works

i even updated the bios without it keeling over & dying
