    Best Laptop Hard Disk?

I have come to realise that 200gb split between two operating systems on my macbook pro just isn't enough so I need to upgrade.

both the 500gb Hitachi 7k500 and the 500gb Western Digital Scorpio Black look to be nice fast drives with lots of space, am I likely to notice any difference between the two? or are the faster, better options out there? (other than a SSD, a little too pricey :-/ )

    Thanks in advance.

Seagate do a hybrid between and SSD and normal hard drives. Not too pricey and suppose to be pretty fast and quiet.

    320gb Seagate Momentus XT

    500GB version

They have pretty good reviews ... if you get one tell me what it's like thinking of getting one for my desktop!

Not sure what the Hitachi are like now, a couple of years back they went through a bad period esp on the laptop drives with lots of failiers.

The Western Digital Scorpio Black is a lovely and fast laptop hard drive and would be my choise

They look nice, and I was considering one until I saw this http://forums.seagate.com/t5/Momentu.../bd-p/Momentus
It seems a lot of people have had problems with these overheating, randomly spinning down and general unreliability, especially in macbooks.

I run a WD Scorpio Blue 320 gig drive in my laptop, and it's pretty quick, much faster than the original Toshiba 160 gig drive I took out.

Well spotted Ultra Magnus ... I was quite sold on the idea of getting one, just for a slight performance boost plus an extra half terrabyte . Oh well looks like I will have to save up all my pennies for an SSD.

    Re: Best Laptop Hard Disk?

If its the only drive in the laptop (you do see more these days with a second bay) then the momentus XT will be about the best thing you can buy at present. It's a relatively speedy laptop disk with a few gig of SSD bolted on.
You can't talk to the SSD but the drive controller can cache commonly used files in there so after a while using most of your windows boot files etc will end up on the SSD part of the disk.
Stuck a crucial C300 in my laptop with a scorpio blue for bulk storage and it's made a much bigger difference than the SSD upgrade on my main rig did. The hybrid here will do a similar job for you in 1 drive.

Keep an eye out for random cut-price deals on SSD's (hotukdeals usually works for these) as a lot of the smaller gen2 SSD's are slow moving so getting moved with specials etc.
