    Server Hardware Configurations?

    Hi,

I currently have a host that pays all my bills for hosting a site dedicated to Tiger Woods PGA Tour for the PC, problem is things are getting hard and harder to do and I am not happy that memberships and queues to get files are causing issues, so I am considering getting my own private server.

What I wanted to know is how many other have thier own and what configs do you go for? The one I am looking at is this...

    - 2.8 GHz Pentium 4
    - 80 GB Drive
    - 1024 MB Ram
    - 1200 GB Bandwidth
    - Private VLAN
    - Red Hat, FreeBSD, Windows

For $129USD a Month, ok or would you go for something different? I need at least 750GB of bandwidth a month, hence the large overhead on this account.

Also anyone got any suggestions for raising funds other than just straight out asking for donations?

I know officially this is an internet question, but its the hardware config I wanted to check on so I put it in hardware chat.

    Muy Bien,

    m@

That looks like it should stand up fine, although how much traffic do you get? do you serve videos/sounds, or just text/images?

    how come only 80gb HD?

we serve up course files, basically we have around 20-25GB of add on courses, to be honest 80GB is more than enough space, I want to appeal to other games too, so I am trying to think of other ways and other projects, basically this needs to pay for itself as I can;t afford the costs alone, so I figure other games = more potential donations....

80GB May be enough space - but will 7200RPM IDE/SATA be fast enough to cope with the load? Don't know. But if the server is gonna be well used and well specced, i'd go for either a 10,000rpm WD Raptor SATA drive or a 15,000 RPM SCSI Seagate Cheetah.

I agree with butuz, HD acces times will be a mission critical point when you build this pc.

    Two options are
    1. 2x10,000rpm WD Raptor SATA drive in raid formation 72GB or 144GB of capacity
    2. 2-5x15,000 RPM SCSI Seagate Cheetah in raid formation at least 25gb to 300-600GB of capacity.

Also I would split the network traffic via a couple of ethernet cards to distribute the load on the server.

    Processor is ok

I would change the memory to ECC ram for extra stablity and double the amount to 2048MB. But thats depending on the Size of you internet connection.

I am not physically building and hosting, I am buying a server hosting package, I will have a look into the hdd issue, of course I would love 2 gigs of ram but I ain't made of gold LOL

    Cheers folks...
