My guess is a bad earth somewhere. If an OS loses access to a disk for a bit, it just logs an error and tries again.

This coming from my medical studies: you're all suggesting treatment for the symptoms, not the cause.
In other words: don't kick it!

I would go along with hard drive cable, but check Event Viewer for error messages.
I suffered occasional hangs (not from knocking case) after months of no issues, using the motherboard provided cables that didn't include a catch.
The eventual hard lock would kill Windows and required reinstall. This happened at least twice but at 6 month intervals, or more.
Replaced S-ATA cable for hard drive with one with metal catches, and not had problem since. Think cable was working lose from motherboard connection instead of hard drive.
Had messages like this in Event Viewer Systems log.
