486 DX2 66 Mhz 8Mb of Ram. My Dad had a receipt for a memory upgrade I think it was for 8Mb of RAM for £250!!!!
This was obviously way abck in the day
My first Real PC was some sort of Viglen thing which was a 386 upgraded to a 486DX40 with 4mb ram it was a strange beast and spent most of it's time on the floor in a corner as it ketp crashing plus i also had a fantastic Amiga setup at the time.
I later found the cause of the crashing, It needed a Cpu Heatsink and fan. £18 later and my new found interest took over and made my Amiga redundant lol
Pentium MMX thing, no idea about the rest of the spec, cant blame me, was 9 back then
Primary kit:
Fuji S5 Pro - Nikkor AF 50/1.8 - Nikkor AF 85/1.8
Epson RD-1
Film Kit:
Leica M3 - Summicron 50/2 DR - Zeiss ZM 25/2.8 - M-Rokkor 40/2
Olympus OM2n - Zuiko 50/2 Macro - Zuiko 50/1.4 - Zuiko 35/2.8
Depending on your definition of PC .. ZX spectrum 16k it was Christmas present 1982 was delivered in Mid October got it out of the box turned it on, saw the flash of black and then the white screen and the copyright message ... then back in the box till Christmas day torture!
If a PC is some kind of IBM clone then hand built ordered way back when this was a very good PC ~£1200...
14" monitor!
P120 (non mmx)
1.6 GB drive
16MB EDO RAM memory price crash mean the 8MB in the buget could be doubled
1MB Diamond stealth
soundblaster (32AWE I think)
CD x4 DRIVE
and the best bit 10mbit network card for DOOM!
I think my first PC was a Viglen - P133 MMX - 32mb of Ram Soundblaster, 8x CD-ROM and 1Gb hard disk. Not sure on graphics, ATi Rage possibly??
Played with a Commodore waaay before that though
Start of Non-PC with borrowed Commadore Pet and Commadore Vic20, then was bought a Commadore 64.
Now proper PC:-
1) Amstrad 2086 - came with 20Mb hard disk
2) 486DX2 66
3) PII400, 64Mb (upgraded over the years to 192Mb)
4) Core 2 Duo E6600, 2Gb
as you can see I don't upgrade that often
A Commodore PET -
http://www.old-computers.com/museum/computer.asp?c=191
I saved hard and got the 16Kb version (8 Kb was at least a hundred quid)
My first computer was a Commodore 64 the one with the full size keyboard, forget the model now. Have some good memories playing games on that, they were great although for some reason I went through three power packs, they just kept going for me, don't know why.
First proper PC was:
Pentium 233 Mhz with ground breaking MMX instructions.
64MB SDRAM
4GB Quantium Hard Drive
Titanium motherboard - I believe thats the correct manufacturer.
ATI video card
4MB! Voodoo 1 Graphics Card
Soundblaster Sound Card
17" Sony Multiscan 200SX Monitor
Windows 95 Version 2 - Posh!
Its amazing how things move on, and it was only 9 years ago.
Let's see: ZX81, Spectrum, Atrari ST, Amiga, IBM X86, Compaq X86 Portable (weighed an absolute ton), 286 (these last 3 in glorious mono), 386DX with EGA, 486DX, Pentium I, etc. etc. etc........
Sinclair ZX82 with the built in tape reader... a few nintendo consoles later... then a 166 mmx beast! With a 2gb hard drive which was assured to be all the space i'd ever need. That wasn't quite true...
I built my first computer (not a PC), it was a 2000 solder joint circuit board with a 6502 on it with numeric keypad. Can't remember the name right now, but was made by Lucas I think. This was in the early 80's when I was at Plessey.
I used the Rhode & Schwarz PPC there too - a Commodore "Superpet" in badged mode with 64k RAM and an 8" floppy and BASIC. We used it as an IEEE488 test bench controller.
I moved on thru the Sinclair toys (writing stuff in machine code on the way), and later Commodires (sic) and Amigas, to my first real PC which was really late in 1995 !! A rubbishy thing with no name.
Then I started to upgrade, and have never looked back
First was an Amstrad CPC with multidrive & 3" floppy drive & green screen (later upgraded to a modulator and TV.
