Handbrake release note says that libx264 was updated.
Release notes for that give lots of performance tweaks specially in x86-64.
There seem to be a lot of code paths in there.

Now we just need some Bulldozer figures.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
Don't suppose anyone still has the output files from 0.9.5 and 0.9.6 to compare sizes? I know it's not ideal but it might give some indication of quality has been changed dramatically in the preset.
I now get 10.139193 fps for Tron if I use High Profile with my Core i3 2100. That is a huge drop from 38.018112 fps.
The thing is the profile used can make a large difference in the relative performance of CPUs after having a look at this article now:
http://ht4u.net/reviews/2011/amd_fx_...ew/index15.php
The Core i3 2120 is very close to a Core i5 750 for the low quality iPod profile, but is nowhere close for the High Profile encode.
If the Normal setting is now reduced quality, then it means a lower load on the CPU.
Hence, perhaps High Profile will now be the better choice as it stresses the CPU more, and this thread is about multi-threaded POWAR!
I still think that the Core i7 will probably rule the roost here.

After looking at the HT4U article, I think we should default to High Profile. This is a better test of CPU processing power if the Normal preset is less demanding now.
Reading the Handbrake release note they claim that quality and output file size remain the same, they have just tuned for better efficiency. That with the libx264 updates and it could well just be faster.
Does the High profile make the output file bigger?
Do I smell 2 graphs, one for high/normal?

Might be a good idea, although it would mean more work for people!
Edit!!
I think that actually it is an excellent idea, as it will be useful to see how a variation in load affects the relative positioning of the CPUs.
If we see a big difference it could explain why certain websites contradict each other.
I hope everyone is fine with this??

I still feel far too much disdain for handbrake. It makes very poor use of avisynth, "HandBrake does not currently support control of the x264 Preset and Tune options", etc....
Just want to double check, this is still running on cpu only? no gpu acceleration/PPU ?
