@rancur3p1c: It doesn't look like the encoder supports SSE3 (don't confuse SSSE3), it's not enabled on any logs I can see. SSE3 doesn't really offer any useful instructions for h264 encoding AFAICT.

Re: The Hexus HandBrake 0.9.6 charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??

    My Q6600 reports this:
    Code:
    x264 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast SSSE3 Cache64
The Q6600 most definitely supports the whole SSE3 instruction set, yet libx264 doesn't use it, so it likely doesn't use it on anything.

Edit: It seems that it did suport it, at least in 2008:

Re: The Hexus HandBrake 0.9.6 charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??

    AMD FX8150 4600Mhz
    RAM 8GB 1600 9,9,9,24
    MB ASUS Sabretooth 990x
    OS W7 64bit SP1
    Handbrake 0.9.6 64bit

    HIGH
    BBB 18.112856 fps
    Tron 24.631260 fps
    Splice 17.173439 fps

    NORMAL
    BBB 68.933891 fps
    Tron 72.560448 fps
    Splice 56.828663 fps

This result can be directly compared to the 0.9.5 results you have in the chart as it is the same
    PC with no changes.

There is a good increase in speed here on the BD with 0.9.6 but it is not as high as the boost the Intel CPU's get.
With 0.9.5 the 8150 slotted right in between the 2500k and 2600k at the same clock speed.
Now it is soundly beaten by both.

Some very interesting results from the Sandy's
A quick test on the 2500k showed 93fps on BBB Normal.
A quick test on the 2600k showed 84fps on BBB Normal.
Hang on a minute something isn't right there !
    Faster on the 2500k ?
I repeated the test, this time disabling HT on the 2600K effectively turning it into a 2500K and it then encoded at the same speed as the 2500K PC.

I can only conclude from this that when using AVX HT is a hindrance rather than an advantage.

Handbrake used the same cpu switches on both the Sandy's and the Bulldozer.
    x264 [info]: using cpu capabilities: MMX2 SSE2Fast SSSE3 FastShuffle SSE4.2 AVX

I may do some tests on the 3930 later but i am reasonably confident it will be faster using Handbrake
    0.9.6 with HT disabled

Perhaps some other Forum contributers with HT enabled SB's can also test this behaviour.

Edit: ran some tests on the SB-E

    Intel 3930k 4500Mhz 125x36
    6C (12T with HT)

    Same motherboard used?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."

for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Cool, now we have some additional BD results and an SB-E result.

PCZ,did the BD system have, the Win7 hotfix installed?? I don't think it will make a huge difference(just wondering if the initial part of the encode would run a tad faster). I assume all the systems are at 4.6GHZ?? BTW,what are the specifications of the Intel systems??

Terbinator, have you run any of the encodes using High Profile on your Core i5 system?? BTW,you need to update your signature.

Not yet sorry. 'The Beast' has pretty much been an office machine for the past two weeks whilst i do uni work.

The reason i was asking about the motherboard is that my GENE-Z boosts all four cores of the 2500K to single-core turbo speeds (3.7GHz, rather than 3.4GHz).

2 thanks for 1 total post, that must be a record.

About HTT slowing things, it adds to what we were discussing earlier, a possible scaling issue beyond four cores or some single-threaded bottleneck. With HTT on, this 'bottleneck' will be sharing a core with another thread.

    Interesting...

That's a good theory that could be tested with a core i3 (2 cores + hyperthreading). Anyone want to step up to test?

Re: The Hexus HandBrake 0.9.6 charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??

So one would assume that if Handbrake makes effective use of 4 threads, irrespective of CPU architecture, then 2 core + 2 hyperthreads would run better than simply 2 cores.

Conversely, if Handbrake doesnt like the way that Intel does hyperthreading, that would also be apparent (though not very likely I admit).

HTT is just a way of using what would otherwise be idle execution units; if a program is optimised very well for the architecture, HTT could just get in the way. It could also have something to do with Turbo, maybe if all threads are loaded you don't get a boost but if only the cores are loaded they CPU assumes lower power so boots them?

Re: The Hexus HandBrake 0.9.6 charts - who has the greatest multi-threaded POWER!!??

With me having a 1045T now I will start doing some test later tonight, had a look in my bios and I can turn off cores, so will think about doing 1, 2, 4 and 6 in my runs, though most likely only in normal profile as that is where the biggest differences are being seen.
Indecently I really want to turn a core off and make this chip into a 5 core whenever steam decides to do it's survey, am I a bad person to want to screw with their data?

Anyway my view so far of a 2.7ghz X6 V my old 3.3ghz Q6600 is quite positive, memory performance has doubled (understandable, it is twice as fast), and the per core performance in most benchmarks is the hovering about the same or very slightly ahead, which considering the 600mhz speed defect is quite a good result.
I can't use my water loop on this right now though, as my block won't fit, though the stock cooler is keeping it at 45-50C at full load (though it is one of the cheap stock coolers without heatpipes) and as I am not 100% on the safe working temps I am not willing to overclock it on the flimsy bit of aluminum until I get a new mount or block.

Seems like at 6 threads it has trouble loading them all fully, there were only really a couple of places it loaded them up fully, and alot of time it spent at 60-80%

Edit: none of the columns are labeled even in the full log, this program may not be as useful as I fist thought to log cpu usage
