The thermal paste I am using is just the one which comes with the HSF. It's white and comes in a small sachet.

How could it be a PSU issue?

Hey guys, I borrowed a PSU from a friend of mine. However it's only 230Watts. Is it ok if I use this to see if the problem is from the PSU or is 230 Watts not enough?

I'm sure it's 230 Watts. The generic one i have is 350W. I just wanted to know if it's ok if i connect the 230Watts PSU to see if the problem is from the PSU.

I think your idle temps are high! You want to be mid to high 30's at idle, max. Reported temps in the bios can be really out, the core will be running hotter than 50 imho which is defo bad. Sticking more volts up its botty will compound your problems I'm sure, but try it to rule that out.

Have a very good look at the Processor, is the label a bit dodgy?, does it look as if any of the bridges have been tampered/shorted?

There were a glut of cheap Athlons that had been o/c'd and rebadged from eastern europe, my brother ended up with one unfortunately that he bought at a computer fair. It was supposed to be XP2600+ but ran similar temps to you and was never stable. It turned out to be a rebadged XP1700+ and was only really stable with his HSF up to 1.7Ghz!

There was a thread on this, I'll try to find it for you.....

edit: I can't find it sorry. Ask Agent, as there were some pics of 'dodgy' AMD labels in that thread to compare.

    Hi guys....

    after trying the following:

    - Change of PSU
    - Change of Heatsink - Coolermaster Aero 7+
    - Change of RAM (different brands, speeds)
    - Upping VCore to 1.75
    - Change of CPU - XP2500+ and still the PC was hanging
    - Change of Graphics Card
    - Disconnected everything except for HD, CPU, RAM, Floppy

I concluded that the fault was from the motherboard. I slotted in the XP2800+ on my ABIT NF7-s and it worked fine. So it must be the motherboard. I am going back to the shop today and have it changed with an ASUS A7N8X-X.

I also searched the internet yesterday and I found out that i wasn't the first guy having these problems with this motherboard, ie. ASUS A7V600. So all of you out there please think twice before purchasing this motherboard.

thanks for all the support guys!

Why didn't you say you were using that motherboard!
I think we all assumed you were using the Abit in your sig which shouldn't have had any problems.
Anyway, glad you got it sorted

Don't replace your cooler. Have a look at this then replace your cpu! Go to the metacafe website & use either "cpu cooling" or "322489" in the search field. (Hexus is not allowing me to post an url)
I ended up having to put a NOISY MONSTROUS Thermaltake on this lousy little 1300mhz AMD & it still runs at 42-44 celsius! I've NEVER abused it.
