    AMD XP2800+ Overheating Problems

I am building a new PC for my friend I have a problem though. The Processor, AMD XP 2800+ - 12.5 Multiplier 166FSB - is overheating causing my PC to hang.http://forums.hexus.net/newthread.php?do=newthread&f=5
Oops When I underclock it, it runs fine. The cooler I am using is a Coolermaster XP AMD CPU Cooler, nothing special, but on the box it says it supports processors up to AMD XP3200+.

What do you think is the problem? Shall I change the cooler?

    thanks

Have you got good contact between the HSF and CPU? What thermal compound did you use? Is the HSF fan working?

The thermal compound I used is the generic white one, the one which came with the cooler and the HSF is working.....bios is saying at around 2200 RPM. I could try to re-sit the HSF.....but it's making contact definitely as the heatsink gets hot.

That fan seems a bit slow mate I bet its hardly pushing any air onto the sink, try reseating the sink first and if thats unfruitful I suggest going for something like a Aero 7.

I tried reseating the HSF yesterday but still the PC hangs while Windows is loading. This is so strange since the HSF is supposed to handle up to an AMD XP 3200+. Could it be a faulty processor? Today I will but a new HSF and see what happens.

Where did u get the CPU from? and is there plenty of ventilation in the case? Blowing hot air over the heatsink won't give good cooling.

Put it straight into the BIOS and see what the temps are after 10 minutes(If it lasts that long)
Seems like more of a CPU or RAM issue to me

I got the CPU from a German supplier. I have a fan on the side of the case blowing air inside and another fan on the back of the case blowing air outside the case.

When i boot straight to bios the CPU temps are 43~48 degrees celsius straight away. I will try to leave it for 10 mins and see what happens.

Could it be RAM?.....I am using 512MB Apacer DDR400 Ram. I will try with DDR333 RAM tonight. The CPU VCore is 1.6.....is that ok?

I don't think it's the CPU because if i underclock it to 1660Mhz it doesn't hang.

No, stick with the DDR400 RAM. That at least should be stable at 333 speeds.
The temps don't sound too bad but the voltage may be slightly low.
Try upping it slightly but don't go mad.
What power supply are you using?

the power supply is just a general PSU which comes with a 30 bucks case.

Try 1.65V on the CPU to see if it makes a difference.
Also, run Prime95 torture test to see if it is stable.
At what stage does it hang?

Are you also using windows XP? If so check they event viewer to ensure its not a system based problem.

Me thinks this could be a PSU issue, if you can borrow another to test that would be a good start.

Yes I am using windows XP but it hangs up before it even loads the OS. I will try with a different PSU aswell. So you don't think the problem is from the HSF?

The only problem I foresee with the HSF is the slowness of the fan or the actual sink base may be warped. The warping is a rare occurance but can happen and can be cured by lapping the base. Personally I would spend £9 on a Aero 7 lite. Even if its not a HSF issue you have a better fan pushing more air.

    Few questions:
What are you putting on the CPU, Artic Silver or coolermaster paste?

It's very unlikely, usually what happens with overheating is that the computer will flick off and start making a siren noise.
Did you try it at 1.65V?
