Going to DDR2 will not need a socket change, but it will need a motherboard change, unless the CPU's memory controller can deal with both types of memory...

have to disagree with you on that having had a vopd barton at 2.7GHz. This 3500 is way way faster.

Other than the fact the dual channel memory controller is the reason for all those spanky extra pins!

There is at least 1 board that has been shown that had both 754 & 939 sockets on it.

Apparently there is a 2nd one too

yeah the dual channel really adds a good performance boost.
this 3500 at stock runs visibly faster than my 3400 clawhammer did.

you could wait forever not upgrading and waiting for latest etc.
bottom line is if you have a spare £200 then get a 2nd hand S754 setup.
if you have a spare £260 or so then get a 2nd hand S939 setup.

It's definitely a bit quicker when I change from single to dual by fiddling the DIMMs about.

I got rid of my 754-3200 setup for 400 quid though, so I didn't do too bad really!

they actually perform very similarly. With the 939 being better b/c it has a lot more memory bandwidth. But usually the 754 has all the bandwidth it needs, so there's not a big difference between the 2 at the same speed. However, the 939 pin should have a longer life/upgrade path.

One of me mates. He took my X800Pro as well, but I didn't do too bad out of the deal to be honest.... I'd kind of priced it slightly below what he offered, but I could hardly turn his offer down could I?!

The "upgrade path" is pretty much why I moved to the 939 kit to be honest.

If noise is an issue get a 120mm silenx. If not get a 120mm YS-Tech or similar.
best aircooled solution imo.better with H2O though.

Personally, I would have gone for the Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu had I not bought the Reserator instead.

Have put one in my old A64-3200 based machine I sold to my mate and it's damn good.
