How noisy are Maxtor Diamondmax 10s?

I see the komplett have the 200GB version at £62 in their weekly deals. I was going to get a Samsung Spinpoint 160GB at pretty much the same price.

I know the samsung is a very quiet but still fairly fast drive, thats why i chose that.

But, i know the Maxtor is much faster and has an extra 40GB for about a quid.

So the question is, how much louder are the maxtors than the samsungs?

    Thanks
    Ben

Well if its any remote help the Maxtor 120gb with 8mb cache i have is noisy enough to alert me when im not listening to music
If my bed were just a little closer it'd make a fairly good alarm clock actually, espeically when checking for a full virus scan... really does make a right ol' commotion

Gonna drive you crazy, I've had to get rid of 2 Maxtor drives already, such a shame cause they kinda bulletproof, drop them a few time, still run fine and pretty fast. Never try things like vibration dampers though.

Well if the Raptor RAID is a little too noisey then just hide it behind the uber-decibels of an nV SLI system

Apparently the 10's are much improved over the 9's in terms of noise, but ive not had my hands on a 10 yet to comment on if its the truth or not...

They'll never be completely silent due to the nature of what a HDD does.... If it bothers you stick it in an enclosure....

or get a quiet one to start with!?

You can get a program to lower the rpm and therefore noise output

my 200 gig seagates are silent - until they do something; then they sound like the apc in Aliens when ripley blows the trans-axle. ( i just watched that last night )

I got some elastic ribbon from john lewis and made a cradle in a spare 5 inch bay. No vibration transferred to case = no noise whatsoever. Can't hear it at all now. Total cost - £1.14

    hope this helps....

I got a 200GB Diamondmax 10 a couple of days ago; I set it up to make a copy of m existing 30GB drive so it could be my new boot disk, and it was pretty much absolutely silent as far as I could tell, even with my ear right next to it I couldn't hear it over my case fans. Possibly in a case it might transfer a bit of vibration, but in that case just suspend it from a 5 1/4 bay like fulnnelhead says.
