I don't think that's particularly fair on AMD, tbh. It's not like they've got Vega cards sitting in as warehouse but they're choosing not to sell them. Silicon doesn't go from concept to fabrication in weeks, after all. AMD set up a silicon roadmap, that called for Polaris to launch now and Vega to launch later. nvidia's roadmap just happened to have a higher performance part launching now. If AMD had access to nvidia's roadmap perhaps they'd have chosen differently, but perhaps they'd have left it alone and decided to go after the volume anyway. They're a small company nowadays running on very tight margins for their industry. Going after the high volume products probably makes the most business sense.

Well, whatever you get, there'll almost always be soemthing technically "better" that you might have chosen if you'd waited. The obvious ones right now are Vega and Zen.

If you want to game at your monitor's native resolution 4k is probably a bad plan unless you can afford a Titan X. That pushes you down to 2560x1440 (or an ultrawiode variation thereof), and which point the RX 480 and GTX 1060 will actually make a good fist of games, moreso if you get a display with freesync (AMD) or G-sync (nvidia). To get the best benefit you'll want a screen with a wide refresh range.


If it was me*, I'd be getting an RX 480 and a 2560x1440 screen with a wide Freesync range - there's a list of freesync monitors and their refresh rates at http://www.amd.com/en-us/innovations...aming/freesync. For best performance you want a screen with the maximum freesync rate at least 2.5x the minimum, because then you can use low framerate compensation to extend the range downwards.


*Actually, that's a lie - if it was me I'd be getting an RX 460 and the cheapest 1080p monitor I could find that supports Freesync. But that's because I'm a cheapskate, and I don't game enough to make it worth investing heavily in the kit.

As well as a new gpu and monitor I would like another 8gb of ram. If I run 4 sticks instead of two, will it slow my system down? To the best of my knowledge, my motherboard isn't quad channel.

Currently looking at Dell 2715h and Asus MG279Q 27-Inch FreeSync Monitor. Unsure which to get to most likely go along with a 480. I want the best quality. They are a similar price.

The Dell is pretty decent and is being replaced by the U2717 series.

The Asus looks decent too,but is more expensive as it is orientated as a gaming monitor and has FreeSync.

The R9 Nano and Fury Nano can be had for £300 - they are generally faster than a RX480 or GTX1060 but the only issue is that they have 4GB of VRAM.

Dell doesn't seem to have a 27inch freesync IPS panel yet. I love my current dell. But the Asus seems more 'future proof' if that makes sense lol. But then I'm tempted by a 1070 so I can run the 1440p as the 480 will struggle. But f I get that I refuse to pay extra for a gsync monitor.

In a bit of a bind lol. I would wait a month or so if it made a difference. But don't think it will.

However does the PQ on the Asus MG279Q 27-Inch compare to the dells? Its about 430. I know the one you mentioned is cheaper but the Asus has a higher resolution.

Other than the freesync would the quality between it and the Dell 2715D be comparable? I can't find the 2717 for sale but will keep looking.

Both are very good monitors - the Dell 2717 has been announced a while back but is nowhere to be seen.

Right so, nearly about to buy this lol. Asus or dell screen? If they are the same I'd get the Asus as it has freesync for a card in the future.

I'm still toying with a 480 or a 1070. Unless I can get a fury x for a similar price to the 1070. I may also get an svs sb2000 lol
