P4 mobo questions - Please help!!

Earlyer this week a mates pc died, trying to fix it

I *think* its the mobo.. anyway is there anything special about p4 boards that I might have missed?
At a guess, its the bios chip.. or something.. that seems to be what causes most mobos to just die for no identifiable reson.. (without a spare bios chip to test with anyway..)

The p4 was a 1.8, dunno what type (the really old crappy one - before northwoord iirc).

The board was a MSI 6507 (I845). (here is my WTD thread for a replacement)

What board should I be looking for, whats compatable with this chip (or how do I find out?)

I thought maybe someone on hexus or another forum might be selling an old board like this around now (with pci express etc..just came out.. good time
to upgrade..) but I havent seen any yet

Im tempted to tell him to get a AMD64 cpu and chip, if getting a p4 board is going to be costly.. that way itll last a few years...

Bargain. So what its SIS, SIS make good solid chipsets, not gonna be more than two percent slower. Want faster? Get a new chip! This should do everything you want...

Which do you think is better..? ara also sell a few other p4 boards which looklike they might be good for just a few quid more..

Well...the Gigabyte one has AGP x8, three memory slots, and prescott support if its gonna get upgraded...the Asrock has more USB on the backplane and is "proper" intel so....I'd go SiS but..up to you!

NB neither support 800MHz FSB processors...
