i should think it'll be a while yet, at least a year.

Probably not long after Dual Core CPUs start to arrive. Simply because it'll mean AMD wil have to redesign the core to accomodate a new memory controller. Besides, A64s don't have much benefit from the increased memory bandwidth.

Um.....never. AMD will introduce a new socket for it's DDR-II processors.

Whats the diff between ddr 2 and standard anyway? I read in a magazine that ddr3
sends two bits every clock edge so is QDR (quadruple data rate) but they didnt say this about DDR2 which i thought did do this. So whats good about DDR2 except lower voltage.

Erm... Its faster. Its latency is a bit ****e, but its still faster than 3200.

Performance on the A64's memory controller makes up for lack of DDR2.

Socket M2 will handle DDR2 and above anyways...

Last I heard was Q1 2006, but that'll probably slip a bit. There's no point them doing it until DDR2 reaches price parity with DDR since realistically they'll gain very little performance from DDR2.

The jump in speed between DDR and DDR2 looks ridiculous when you look at the increase in speed DDR3 gives. I'm wondering whether AMD are prolonging their launch of DDR2 chipsets because they release the technology is already vastly superceded?

I would suspect that socket M2 has more milage for improving the memory controller later on - so if it starts out life for DDR2 - it can be enhanced for DD3 without a new socket type...

This is just my own suspicions though... as you said, DDR3 is an upcoming tech - but its a while before it'll become affordable.

I think they may be wrong about the FX-57 being launched ... i think the FX-55 has at least another month or two to go...

Yes, that is what is probably going to happen, there is really no point of AMD going to DDR2, especially now.

EDIT: Also whatever happened to the price cuts and new cpus, i have heard nothing.
