I triple-checked all the connections before I powered up including the cpu fan connection, and the only doubt I had was the extra power connection on the mobo, (if you're familiar with the Tagan I used the blue P4 connection), as it was the only one that fitted exactly the holes.. I'm not worried about te fried components (no use in crying over spilt milk!), what's more important is not making the same mistake again when I get the new mobo and CPU....

There is one other remote possibility. My A8V-E (slightly different to your A8V I know) does not correctly set the VCore for the AMD 64 Winchester which should be 1.4V. It actually supplies 1.5V by default, even with the latest BIOS 1003. It is very easy to go beyond the limit of 1.55V as the BIOS setup screens are very confusing with offset voltages being added to the 'Hammer Startup' voltage. Are you 100% sure that your mobo supports Winchesters straight out of the box (i.e. does it have the correct BIOS for Winchester support)?

On my mobo I have to set the CPU voltage manually to 1.3V. The mobo then adds the 100mV VCore offset to give me a true VCore of 1.4V (according to Asus Probe).

I notice you've got the same case as me. The earthing cord from the Tagan: where did you attach that to? I found an ideal mounting point at the bottom of the 5.25" drive cage. If you look carefully in there you'll see a screw hole at the back end of the lowest drive bay. You can use the fifth mounting screw supplied with the Tagan to attach the earthing wire there very securely and you won't risk shorting anything on the motherboard by trying to earth it with one of the mobo mounting screws.

Mmm.. first thing I did was update the bios to the latest (1009) as I read somewhere that there was an issue with winnies and A8V's with an early bios..

Thanks for the tip on the earthing cord..

Don't really know what to do now, maybe try a new CPU in the old mobo.. but I have no idea on why it all went wrong..
