I think it’s something to do with ‘UEFI’ again as it says UEFI Hardrive as boot option 1

I’ve done the BIOS update on my GPU so it now works with UEFI but I assume my older hardrive don’t?

UEFI is popping up a lot so I’m going to research what it is

That shouldn't be down to hardware or firmware in the drive, but simply the partition scheme used when formatting.

If you have old drives that are partitioned in the old MBR format then a UEFI BIOS won't want to play. Delete all the partitions and install Windows from fresh and you get a GPT drive layout and can switch off CSM.

You can convert drives from MBR to GPT. I did that for most of my drives and didnt lose any data although I did a full back up of each drive before I converted just in case.

I assumed there must be a way but never had a tearing need. For future reference, how did you do the conversion?

One thing I have noticed is that HWMonitor doesn't seem to list as many things as it was on the old system. Which is annoying as it would be nice to make sure the temps are ok while I'm using it. Might have to look into different software

Just ordered the NVMe and it's arriving tomorrow

I plan to do a fresh install of Windows 10 on it so hopefully it'll work with my current Windows key or my other Windows 7 ones I have.
Are there any tips on moving programs across? Is it possible to move them across without freshly installing them?

Only time I've done something similar before was when I mirrored my whole drive onto a new one

If you look on the WD website they have a cloning tool for download, so the easy thing to do is just clone your existing boot drive using that. That's what I did on my recent migration from an old small SSD to a nice new 1TB WD Black.

I'm sure Windows has some sort of "migrate all your things to a new PC" feature but I've never tried it.

You don't really need to sweat the difference between UEFI and CSM
the main things you'll have issues with, single partition drives over 2tb (MBR limit) changing bios settings outside of the BIOS (useful if you're manually overclocking as you can change the cpu&gpu settings without having to reboot)

With the automated boosting systems of current cpu's and gpu's I see less and less of a need for manual oc unless you're into the competitive overclocking scene and then you'd want to run clean custom installs anyway.

There is some other remote management/control tools that require UEFI as well, but again I'm not sure that's needed or wanted.

UEFI boot time is purported to be quicker than Legacy mode, but whether you would really notice the difference is debatable.

I can say in all honesty yes it's a tiny bit faster, a few seconds most, how often do you reboot? is a full reinstall worth it just to shave off 4 seconds a day on a pc?
On laptops and tablets yes, you want that instant powerup, but also you want firmware updates via windows update which I don't think you can get without UEFI

Well the problem is that I have over 500GB of files on that drive - Windows, games, programs/software, documents, picture, videos etc.

I was thinking of just using the NVMe for games and programs for now and moving things across one by one. That way I can have a sort out at the samew time and not waste space on the NVMe with things that don't need to be on there (Don't need MS Word documents to boot up fast etc). Then keeping all the files on my standard hardrives

or am I being silly and should just clone it and move everything across? Hmm

Sometimes it is nice to have a fresh Windows install, free of all cruft.

Sometimes it is nice to know everything is set up nicely.

The likes of Steam makes games reinstalls pretty easy these days, and things like cloud based password management if you use that.

You could always unplug the old SATA drive and go for it with a fresh install, let it update then plug the old drive back in and see how daunting the experience is to use the machine. My wife had pretty serious grief doing that with Apple's music software, to the point she stopped using it. But otherwise it usually goes OK.

Glad you got your PC working. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of working from the HD while you move things bit by bit over to the SSD. Far more efficient and way faster to just clone it and then move what you don't need to the HD. That makes far more sense in my mind. Or do a clean install like DanceswithUnix suggested above.

Ok I have some qustions with setting up this new NVMe

- Should I set it up fore UEFI or not? and how would I do that
- I have 3 hardrives so is UEFI meant to be for the boot drive only? My drives only work on CSM so I'm worried that only the NVMe may be visible in Windows if I change something
- Do I need to setup the NVMe and then convert the over drives from "MBR to GPT" as mentioned above?

I have no idea what I'm meant to be doing here as I know next to nothing about UEFI and don't even know what it is/does properly. That's because my old computer had old parts which didn't even support it

In other news I got the temperature monitoring software working . I switched from HWmonitor to OpenHardwareMonitor and that works like a charm, even showing more detail than HWmonitor
