    Re: PSU Calculator

Well if a fairly normal Quad core system (no SLI/Xfire, no water pumps, 2 HDDs, mild OC) really consumes 1084W on 100% CPU usage then yes.

    Re: PSU Calculator

Huh? I just put in a 3.1GHz quad core with 8800 Ultra and got 364W. What video card did you use to get to 1084W?

In fact, I just tried with quad 6850s (16 cores total) and it only came to 688W.

I guess we are demonstrating that this isn't trivial to use

Hmm, reckon that's telling porkies for my system. It's claiming I need 700W+ psu...

Well, I'm getting a energy usage monitor in the post tomorrow, so I'll see how truthful it is. If it is correct, I'm amazed my PSU hasn't already given up the ghost, as it's only 580 Watts...

    Re: PSU Calculator

According to the PSU calculator (521W calculation) my 4 year old 420W Tagan PSU should have went nuclear when I used it on my current system. The real figure should be somewhere closer to 300W, tops.

    Re: PSU Calculator

My computer should also have melted, and that's not even including the wireless card as there isn't an option for that, or for overvolting RAM.

Maybe in a subset of cases it's appropriate, but for a lot it seems wildly out.

edit 2: Nope.. user error! Fixed user and it's now much better.

I get 270W for my system, which seems a little high but not too far out.

Hahahaha - it's officially bollocks. Look at <----- My System. What do you reckon the maximum power draw of that is, with all four cores going, and the graphics card fully loaded?!

285 Watts at the wall socket!

So, My PSU is ~80% efficient, so the actual components are only using ~230 Watts.

So what on earth is the point of a 700W+ PSU?! Clearly you can easily power a twin 8800 Ultra gaming rig with a 500W psu... 600 is already more than enough!

Useful instrument (got mine from Maplin). Old box was 108W idle; new one (with C&Q enabled) is 45W.
BTW, all the fuss over TVs on stand-by: my 2yo Philips is 0.9W!
