Temperature monitoring / actions

I'm looking for a piece of hardware that will connect to one of the machines in our server room that monitors the room temperature and then is able to take actions when the temperature reaches a certain level... In this instance I'd like it to run a script that shuts down all the machines. This is to be used in the event of air conditioning failure so hopefully it shouldn't be necessary for just when it gets a bit warm outside!

I'm thinking a small box that connects to one of the machines via serial or USB, and preferably inclusive of suitable software (or if not what is available?)

Should be easy enough to get a temp probe with serial output then you just need a small piece of software to poll it and check the temps.
