    Just reading some specs here:

    http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=1146

which says "Conroe will also feature a new 128-bit SSE optimization that will allow all SSE instructions to be completed in a single cycle."

Both P4 and Athlon64 complete an SSE instruction every 2 cycles. I hope AMD saw this coming (enough people did, so they aught to have) and have their own SSE rehash in the works.

Exactly my thoughts. I cannot see the difference being this big especially FEAR .We'll find out in the summer i suppose.

AMD better have somet up there sleeves, if this is true, as AM2 at the moment will offer 5% increase max.

Conroe is shaping up to be everything i thought it would be, and more.

However i do hope intel dont pull "an intel" on us and stick prices at stupid levels.

$530 thats very competative when you look at AMD's offerings

Now smuch, whilst i'm normally on the reciving end of adjiant's comments, he is absolutely right, the FPU is much better on the Conroe, thats clear. Now as for doing it at a low res, i think thats good because we're not intrested in the graphics card, we want to see the effect of the proccessor (mabye chipset + memory platform too) not the graphics card (which tend to be the major limiting factor as res goes up). SSE are instructions handled by a specail part of the FPU, been able to get 1 instruction per clock, instantly twice the speed of AMD's offerings. Even for a fan boy you've got to say that (on paper, and obviously real life) is going to be good.

Was this on 32bit or 64bit windows? (just curious, FEAR dosen't take advantage of multipule Procs does it?)

Also is Conroe the one that can share FPUs? I was reading something on ars's a few months back i can't find now, talking about dual cores been able to share their FPUs and ALUs, kinda like hyperthreading only good?

without trailing all the way through this thread, david said in the review, its a mid end chip compared to amd's high end fx, so what are the new intel high end?

I think Intel still dominates AMD quite seriously in OEM, laptops, etc. It's mainly enthusiasts that buy AMD. AMD market share of processors = ~15% or something like it AFAIK. Ask Joe Public about CPU companies, and they know "ding-ding ding-dong" intel inside...

It is good to see Intel back in the game at last. I don't particularly like them as a company, but it's good to see some competition in the market.

Still it's not really relevant information yet IMO. It's far from 'Intel hands AMD it's ass on a plate', we are just getting an Intel delivered preview. When there are some more independant reviews, and we see the CPU's on store shelves incl. pricing, we'll know where we stand.

Would the DFI AMD motherboard not having the current BIOS installed cause any issues? I ask because the newer ones added "FX60 support". That's why the AMD CPU shows up as "Unknown" on the screenshot. DFI BIOS link. There are MANY fixes since the initial BIOS release. The "Unknown" thing should have been a red flag that a newer BIOS was needed.

Also, was PowerNOW! disabled on the AMD system? Leaving it enabled can skew benchmark results slightly.

Think they said 2.8 to 3.0 Ghz would probably be top end, with entry level at 1.8Ghz.

Seems to me the 2.67Ghz is more top end then mid-range though based on those numbers.

    Cool

Another win-win situation for all the consumers out there.

But, there is a downside, Intel now need to spend millions on advertising ensuring the masses understand that it is NO LONGER just about Operational Megahertz, but more about the technology used inside the processors.

Possibly, but probably not so bad for AMD this time.

The Northwood had two tricks, high clock and high FSB. Looks to me like Conroe has one trick (though a damned good one) which if AMD adopt as well would instantly give them back the crown.

Yeah so can anybody run us a quick F.E.A.R benchmark Test on their FX-60 and give us the results (1024x768, medium Q obviously).

Yes please.. clock any X2, or even just an Opty to 2.8Ghz.. and run them with an X1900XTX.. I would if I wasnt held back with a cheapo 3800X2 that can go past 2.6 and a 7800GT...
