I haven't got my CPU yet. I was leaving it till last as it was the most likely to go down in price. I'm looking to get an E6400, although may get an E4300. I'll post back here once I've built it.

The black slots appear to be channels A2 and B2. Does it matter whether it's A1 and B1 (ie. the yellow ones) or A2 and B2 ?

Well, if you get an E4300, you may well need to get the bios flashed by whoever you get it off, unless you have a spare 775 cpu kicking around

Ive had the best performance from the yellow slots.

I just noticed I said black slots in the post above, sorry, I was miles away

Or if you want, you can wait for me to try my E4300 and see what happens. If I don't need the celeron I got for the flash then I could pass it on to you

Looking forward to getting my replacement on Monday

Anyway...Maplins tester says I have no -5v.....would that stop the machine starting?

Clunk, you're a wizard, your suggestion worked. But, why did the 2 hour Cmos clear work rather than resetting for 10 seconds or so?

Anyway, I assume I can replace my second stick of Ram now and carry on overclocking more conservatively??

/slips on wizards cloak and hat

I think it just allows all the current to drain from the cmos, and any capacitors and that allows the cmos to completely clear. If anyone knows any different, I would like to know as well

Yes, you can add your second stick of ram, but first, take out the stick that is in, and swap it for the other one and see if its ok. Quite often, when the board is dead like that, one of the sticks of ram is dead or dying, so its worth checking.

Another thing to do is, once you have established that the ram is ok, grab the latest bios and update it, then do a quick cmos clear (about a min, no need to take out the battery), and then go back into the bios and manually enter the ram timings and subtimings and VOLTAGE!!!!!, this is important for stability.

OK, going to work on this now, however my Bios is the latest....only did it the other day.

My Scan comment was to the effect that I was charged for a Bios update (I asked for the 'latest'), but when I built the machine, I didn't have the 'latest'.....

Is it necessary to run both Orthos and Prime95 to check stability?....or, will just one of them do?

Run orthos blend test. If you keep ram at 1:1, you should be able to avoid another episode like this (unless of course you go over 3.6ghz)

Is there some quirk/setting with Vista that I'm missing?

Company of Heroes won't even BEGIN to install ,although the forums and the game documentation say it runs with Vista.

When I look at at the DVD with Explorer, to kick off Setup manually, Explorer displays no files (as though the disk is empty).

When I look at the disk with my XP machine, I can see all the files.

Machine sometimes seems reluctant to boot and/or will sometimes reset Bios to defaults.

I'm not sure if motherboard drivers installed properly as I did have some issues using the Asus DVD on first build.

I did get Orthos to run for 12 hrs at 3.4.

Do you think could be a motherboard driver issue or an o/c issue, or a combination of both?

When it does that, it is because it is objecting to something, usually a bad overclock, as in, if you are trying to run your ram at speeds that it cant do, same with the cpu etc.

Make sure that you have the correct voltage set for your ram, and that if you have to clear the cmos, that you re enter all the timings.

    While I remember...

Set your cpu to 266, ram to 533, everything stock, no extra voltages, and see if you can still recreate the problem, chances are, you wont be able to.

It could just be something as simple as your cpu doesnt overclock well, or that Seasonic PSU is one of the batch of incompatible ones, in which case, ring seasonic and get them to swap you a new one out

Thanks Clunk, but can you see anything untoward below? I was confident that I wasn't 'overpushing'........

    CPU Freq......377 x 9 ....3393
Dram Freq.....DDR2-754MHz (Patriot rated at 800)
    Memory Voltage...2.1 (Patriot std)
    FSB....1508
    vCore....1.4375v
    Timings...4,4,4,12 (Patriot std)
    Running 1:1

Patriot will, I believe, go up to 1.12GHz at 2.5v
