Try Batman: Arkham City or Skyrim if you're looking for a good new PC game that doesn't rely on online multiplayer. I have both and love them. If you are looking for a good multiplayer game, then TF2 can be pretty good, but I have to agree with you that online multiplayer quality has degraded - too many campers and trollers

Why the game makers cannot put an age limit on the server settings is beyond me.

I'm glad i had the best years of online gaming fps, so the kids can now keep it.

Unfortunately the average level of intelligence seems to have declined somewhat amongst today's gamers. Personally I tend to stay out of FPSes for the most part (other than the occasional sojourn into BF3) for exactly those reasons.

I'd recommend having a look at League of Legends, as the teamplay element is a lot stronger and in order to do well some sense of tactics is definitely required. It is unfortunately populated with some of the same kinds of players that plague COD, BF3 etc but if you get playing with a bunch of mates or whatever it's a good laugh. I'd also have a look at EVE Online if you're into MMOs at all, as the playerbase there is on the whole more intelligent and mature (bar a couple of the bigger well-known groups in game) than your average gamer these days.

Recommending LoL to someone in the such as the OP is definitely against what he wants. You only need one bad person on your team and you have to sit through 20 minutes of trauma before you can surrender.

Re: Online pc gaming - soooo boring now!

Agree with OP to a certain extent.

However, there are still pockets of half-way decent, friendly players about.

I'm 43 and belong to a couple of Day of Defeat: Source clans, one being ARP (Alternate Retirement Plan - yeah I know it should be 'Alternative'), that are fairly selective about who play with them - ie bad language, trash talking and generally 'ass-hattery' will get you a ban fairly sharpish

Some of the players are in their 50s and 60s

I also admin on UPA (see sig) though that appears to have died a death...

Re: Online pc gaming - soooo boring now!

I play BF3 on Xbox and have all but those on my Friends list muted. I find that I have a fantastic game, expect for those who spam helicopters attacks in opositions base. I'm 40 and yet seem to find myself top or near top of the scoreboard after most games.

If the game is full of kids, I can't hear them and I pwn their asses. Just mute them and play on official servers. You won't get kicked for playing well and won't hear their whiney voices.

And as for the age arguement. Surely they shouldn't be playing these games because they are too young to play an 18 rated game?

Indeed. But here is your problem.

I was in the supermarket the other day queing near a shelf of games on offer at the end of an eisel, a man (mid to late 30s) wanders up and starts picking up the xbox titles and comes to aliens vs predator. He then says "Ooo! look at this one "Aliens", do you have this?" to someone out of sight the other side of the eisle. I hear a childs voice reply and up wanders his son who was no more than 5 years old! The kid says "no dad I have that one!" so he proceeds to offer him the other games on the shelf including: COD black ops, Mortal Combat and a number of other inappropriate titles. My girlfriend is a social worker (childrens services) and made a less than subtle comment along the lines of "do you have no sense at all?!".

There is no way my parents would have let me play games or watch films with a 15 or 18 certificate when I was that age. So the answer is no they shouldn't be playing them but they do because their parents buy them for them!

If you want a game with a good competitive community join a DOTA-clone or try one of these games: SC2, any CS, TF2, Tribes ascend to name a few, I'm not into competitive games myself too much.

Re: Online pc gaming - soooo boring now!

Let me just start by saying this is my view on the current state of gaming and yes I'm a cynical person lol:

Games didn't always have the best graphics so game designers put a lot of effort into the story line to captivate gamers, now anything which sells well will just spawn sequel after sequel of the same regurgitated S***. I refuse to play games such as COD any more because it always feels like the same game re-branded with minor features added in, then again I've not played since Black Ops.

Additionally like all companies they will look for number of sales and profit, so we are in the age now of "Everyone gets through together", games that would last you a week and be challenging are normally quite easy and may only take 5h - 3d to complete. Graphic technology has advanced nicely but if the game isn't up to par it's as good as a polished turd.

For the last 2 years I haven't really enjoyed gaming as much as I used to, so here I sit playing World of Tanks waiting for something good to restore my faith. (Like and updated version of FFVII... like that's going to ever happen).

Don't even get me started on Console ports...

I don't game as much as I used to or even would like to but as said, the titles are missing. The only games I still like to get back are forza and grand tourismo, arma and GTA, only though sometimes. I simply refuse to pay for games that feels not even finished or such that can be completed in 4 hrs on hardest or like games that I feel I should be like 10 years younger to play.
