Re: Help with buying gaming PC

space out the link as your not allowed yet?

I don't know, I think you still incur charges for borrowing, just no interest if you pay it back within 6 months...

A monster would be alot higher specced than your machine, bigger monitor etc... for £1650, rather than spending that amount on a £1000 pc...

Re: Help with buying gaming PC

You could always get your feet wet and do a fairly cheap self build now. £400 - £500.

We can spec it so it's upgradeable etc..

    Something like

    Intel E5200 ~£55
2GB PC6400 ~£30 (try and get you a single stick)
Asus G31 motherboard ~ £35 (very basic but functional)
    Antec NSK3480 +380W earthwatts PSU ~£53
320GB sasmsung spinpoint (single platter) ~£35
    Samsung Optical ~£15
    Nvidia 9600GT ~£65 or Ati HD4850 ~£100
    Windows ~£65

That comes to as little as £350 with the cheaper gfx card. Still allowing £125 for a decent 22" one (Its generally discounted on scans today only page) and then some change for a basic keyboard, mouse and speaker setup.

THe PC itself will be fine for longer than you would imagine, and the monitor is great. Just your other gubbins which won't be as nice.

If just for game, Duo performs better than Quad i believe. Also gives u more saving for things like ATI 4870x2

Talking Re: Help with buying gaming PC

    Hey, I just registered.
Since I have same type of problem (PC building), I will just post it here.
Been at yoyotech site, but I didn't liked the pre-built PC, so I came with this stuff:

Mainboard: Asus P5N-E SLI Intel 650i
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8400
Graphics: Zotac GeForce 8600GT 1GB DDR2 Graphics Card
    RAM: Corsair 4GB Kit (2 x 2GB) PC2-6400 800MHZ DDR2 Memory x 2
Hard Drive: Samsung 640GB 7200rpm 16MB Cache Sata Hard Drive
    DVD/RW: Asus 20x SATA DVDRW - 2 Bezels Silver/Black Lightscribe
Sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Crystalizer 24bit/96khz 7.1 Audio Soundcard - oem
Case: Antec Nine Hundred/Ultimate Gamer Case
PSU: Corsair VX 550W CMPSU-550VX ATX2.2 Silent Powersupply or Corsair 650W CMPSU-650TXUK Powersupply
CPU Cooler: Zalman CNPS8700NT Ultra Quiet Low Profile CPU Cooler
Monitor: Asus 19" Black VGA Flat Panel Display Widescreen Monitor
Headset: Logitech Digital Precision PC Gaming Headset
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64-Bit Edition DVD - oem
    Peripherals: Gigabyte GK-9PB Silver/Black Kb & Ms Inc USB/MIC/Headphone Keyboard & Mouse

Now some questions. No idea if I need 550 or 650 W PSU, don't really know how to calculate it.
This PC supposed to be mainly for gaming/watching movies and such.
To be honest, last PC I built alone was 2 years ago.
    I need something max £1000-1200.

Now question about graphics card. Is that one ok or should I get a bit better one.
I need it mostly for gaming, maybe some movies but not much.
I want it to be good for Fallout 3 and Eve Online (Premium Graphics version).
I am sure about anything else, CPU, memory. Just this graphics....
    Any ideas?

    Thx in advance
    Bart

Re: Help with buying gaming PC

You will get more responses posting in the general hardware or graphics sections, but in answer to your questions you will want more powerful graphics and the 550W PSU will be more than enough.

If you are building yourself any reason you are getting a 19" monitor? 20" is not much bigger and moves you up to the next resolution which will improve graphics quality a fair bit (as long as you have the graphics card for it) I would go for a HD4850.

Below is an image of what I would get based on your specification, I have not included monitor, mouse and keyboard.

I don't even think webby would agree with the PC he specced there though

He does know his stuff though bless him, he's picking up my slack quite nicely. I'll retire soon

Re: Help with buying gaming PC

Good Mike, glad to hear it...

I posted a final thread, detailing the final version of my PC... and thanking everyone who helped me along the way.

The thread can be found here.

Thanks everyone for all of your help and expertise!

Once everything arrives and I put it together, I'll let you know how it turns out, and maybe upload some photos, and also post the scores and overclocking that it achieves. I don't know enough about computers yet to do this by myself, I have my good friend Moogle who is going to help me, so all build + overclocking credit goes to him
