    Re: Need a new PSU

    Mite be a bit late, but I got an 850W for £65, new, it is modular;
    It is the PowerCool Modular 850, quiet I can't hear it unless it is the only fan running, if you get a PSU that is double of what your PC uses then it will live a long time and at 50% load the PSUs are most efficient... So get a wall watt meter measure your pc on a random PSU at idle then double the wattage and there you go, bob's your uncle

    Its only the thing that transforms 115/230v AC power to 12/5/3.3V DC and provides it to every single device in your pc... why would need to spend more? [/sarcasm]

    Re: Need a new PSU

    I will use this post to ask my question instead staring the new one

    I have really old (5yr) PSU (450W) it works perfectly... At least I think it is, never had a problem with it recently I have test it with the multimeter and all voltages seems ok +/-0.5%.

    As I will now upgrade from Q6750 to 2500k with new motherboard and RAM I was wondering if my PSU will handle it. Is there any other test I can do to make sure it’s running ok?

    No, modern good quality PSUs are at their most efficient at around 80% loading, but check the mfr's data/specifications. In practice the efficiency doesn't vary much between about 65% and 90% - at least not for a good well designed one.

    I have finally managed to find out what i got exactly

    It's Jeantech 450W JN120F-450-AP.

    I have found some old auction with it

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jeantech-4...-/320719695871

    Other thing is efficiency of it which I can only guess is below poor? Not only because of its design but age as well?

    All comments are more then welcome as from one hand i would like to save £70 required for new PSU but from other I don't want to spend £400 on new 2500k and find out it wont work stable on old PSU... :/

    I would check the PSUs in the £550 and £750 builds in the guide:

    http://forums.hexus.net/pc-hardware/...er-2011-a.html

    A 550W PSU will be fine for a single card setup and the 650W PSU for dual card setups. However,a decent 400W to 500W PSU will be fine with a Core i5 2500K and an HD5750 IMHO.

    Personally I would invest in a new PSU - it doesn't seem like it was ever a top quality supply so it's probably only giving you 70% now of it's previously quoted output.

    The electrolytic capacitors that are key to any psu are the most common electronic commonent to fail - even top grade ones have a very limited life if temps on high side, and often they won't fail dead but will cause wrong voltages before failing. I recently had trouble with my video PVR, checked the voltages and the 12volt line was giving out almost 18volts which had killed the drive. Fortunately in my case a quid on new capacitors and an old drive got the pvr repaired but imagine the cost to your pc bits and your data if this happened there.
