Re: Dispatches : The Hidden World of Lap Dancing

I was talking to my mate on teamspeak about this, many years ago when he first met her he told me that she had been protesting outside of the newly FYEO opening in Newcastle. I found it pretty funny at the time so yesterday I asked him if they watched it. They did, apparently she was fuming about the whole thing, kept uttering things like disgraceful and degrading to women a lot.

I had a think about it, and I just cannot understand this point of view. I mean what has it in fact got to do with her? She isn't being forced to go in and pay for it or watch it, what business is it of hers if somebody else does? Also, how exactly is it degrading to women? I don't feel degraded by ropey middle aged male strippers or rent boys in London, so why would women project this degradation on themselves?

    Just don't get it.

quite easy to see the difference between those who have kids here, and those who don't - lol.

wait until you have your own, until your daughter wants to work in one of these clubs, or (as has been pointed out) your kids have to live near/above one of these places.

there's this naivety that suggests 'hey, it's not harming anyone' but there is a price to society, and it will be paid. Don't worry, you'll see (unfortunately).

she wants to work in one of them?

I'd simply ask myself why is it she thinks she can't get more lucrative work. If it makes her happy its a damn side better than her been un-employed.

What about if it was ur son?

I have a couple of friends that dance in 'Gentleman's clubs', but if they fraternise with the customers either inside or outside work, they'd be sacked instantly. Their attitude is that if some sado wants to throw cash at them, so be it, after all, it's easy money for them. Can't say I blame 'em.

I briefly dated a lap dancer when I was a student in Toronto - I was astounded at how much money she made ( without needing to offer "extras" )

prostitution isn't illegal in the UK, its the soliciting etc

I take it from that and your previous statement you think that god is going to burn us all in hell or flood London for our immorality right? I really don't see why we should restrict lapdancing though, I mean in gods eyes we are already screwed because of the gays.

Also for the record, if I had a daughter I would let her do nearly whatever career she wanted, porn, lapdancing whatever. I would draw the line at theologian though.

Lap dancing can be extremely lucrative- I daresay a lot of lapdancers earn more than me, and I'm on what I consider to be a decent wage. I'd have no moral problem at all making a living as a stripper, it's just a shame that I'm a shy, chinless baldie.

True story: when I came back from my first term at university my mum showed me an advert that she'd cut out of the paper for a TV program on Ch5- "The Real Full Monty" (this was late '97, when Full Monty-Mania was everywhere and Channel 5 was even more cheap and tawdry than it is now).

The male stripper in the picture was my absolute doppelganger. Same face, same build, same hair (I had long hair then). The only difference was that he had a small tattoo and didn't have a belly button ring. I mentioned it to my dad later that evening (in a 'isn't that funny dad?' sort of way) and was stunned to find that he genuinely thought it was me.

Re: Dispatches : The Hidden World of Lap Dancing

    From my previous experience mate.

    It works like this.
You walk in an extremely dark bar. This costs you £20.
You buy an beer. This costs you £5.
    You sit down.

Within 5 minutes a young/old skantly clad girl is sitting on your lap chatting you up.
They ask if you want a dance.
    You reply yes.

    They take you upstairs.
They perform a routine they've been doing for the last 3 hours with a look of absolute boredom in their eye, as you look around the private room to see if you can watch a better looking girl at the same time.

    3 minutes pass.
    You pay the girl £20.

You go back downstairs to a bunch of your mates who ask inane, puerile questions about the dance.

You leave the club and realise that £45 for a warm bottle of beer, and something that takes 2 seconds to load on the internet for free, is pretty bad value for money. And that your wife will be well annoyed that you had more than one dance

The rudest it's got for me was a nipple in my mouth on my stag do.
    - Although a few of the skanky one's have offered themselves to some of my mates - I avoid the dodgy ones like the plague!

    It's down to two things:
    1) How well run the establishment is.
Something like this is v.unlikely to happen in a spearmint rhinos for example.

    and

    2) The girl.
The girl can work at the scummiest, run down place in the world, but if she's there for dancing and just dancing that's all she'll do.

I'm no expert mate, but equally I'm not naive - in any decent venue, that stuff will be minimal.
So yes, despatches obviously hunted down the dodgiest places they could - but why not, that's what makes sensationalist reporting.
