XP 64 shouldn't be available at SCAN

I have a quick comment and a question regarding my recent SCAN 3XS system.

    First...

I don't think SCAN should offer XP64 on their video editing machines. As a newbie, I ignorantly thought that XP64 would be supported by hard/software that runs on XP 32 and Vista.

    I was wrong.

From my build alone I found out that my Matrox RT.X2 can't even be installed on XP64. That was the first hang up. But I also found out that the OpenGL 2.0 support in Adobe CS4 isn't supported on XP64 either. So much for my £2600 investment.
So I have a nVidia 3700 Quatro sitting in its PCI-e slot, not really doing anything and a Matrox RT.X2 sitting in its box on the shelf, really not doing anything.

    Secondly, I have a question...
I have a copy of Vista Ultimate 64 (full) on order, and I'm going to be doing a fresh install of the OS on my computer. I REALLY NEED TO KNOW what I need to back up on the way of config files or anything that SCAN has done to my computer. I have RAID 0 and overclocking set up on my system, do I need to do anything, or will I install my motherboard drivers just as usual?

    Many, many thanks,

    Clint

    Hi Clint

The Raid is already set and saved in the bios so you will just need to reinstall windows, all drivers and updates etc and then before installing any other software install Acronis and make a basic recovery image, once you have installed the rest of the software you want to use you can create an incremental backup file

If you need any help with this please let us know

I will check with R&D as to why we are still offering 64Bit XP

    Cheers

    Ben

    Thanks for the reply Ben,

It sounds like all the stuff I don't know how to do will be saved in the BIOS, so that's good for me.
After installing my new OS, will my warrenty/1 year of support that I paid for be void in any way?

    Clint

    Hi Clint

The warranty is not voided with the system, we do take into consideration that all tests were done in XP64 bit if there are any issues in the future, you will of course need to create a new Acronis Image once you have resoftwared and added all the drivers etc, we can email you details of how to do this should you need them

    Cheers

    Ben

Re: XP 64 shouldn't be available at SCAN

    Hi Clint

In reply to your statement regarding Win XP 64bit should not be available on the 3XS Video edditing machines I disagree as there are many combinations of hardware which will work under this operating system. If the edditing card in question was purchased or installed by one of our engineers compatibilty would of been highlighted before the computer was completed. Unfortunately we can not be responsable for 3rd party software/hardware incompatibilities as this is your responsabiltiy to check all compatibiltiy issues.

I see you have already had your question about a reinstall replied to, I hope this has answered your query.

    Best Regards

I'll be blunt and to the point. The Scan folk here are too polite (and have to be so - company image). So I'll say it for them.

Really one of the biggest UK suppliers of computer hardware shouldn't offer XP x64? What are you crazy?

Any 32-bit software will work on x64 platform. The hardware depends entirely on the manufacturer.

Again, that is the manufacturers fault and NOT Scan's.

You can enable the OGL support: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re...ssage=30004125

XP64 has some horrid OGL bugs though that MS are not going to fix, so you may well run into issues.

As for XP64: IMO it should be an option. We use it for a rendering farm at work. It is considerably less resource hungry than Vista64, but has considerably less support too. Just a matter of picking whats important to you really
