Wanting a top of the line rig, been pointed here.

    Hi Guys,

I am currently speccing up a top of the line machine for my new PC. I got referred to you guys as a possibility by a poster on another forum (I think he posts here as well as he said he was buying a computer from you). I have had a look around your site, and read the review of your "jellyfish" machine in this months custom PC magazine, very impressive! The spec I have so far outlined in my mind is a little different from the options on your site tho so I will lay it out here and see what you can do for me/if you have any opinions on what I could do better. I am looking to purchase this system very soon and there is a decent chance it will come from you guys. OK.....

I would like the highest quality components available in my system. I realise that this is not cheap and I am willing to spend a lot of money on this rig, dont worry about cost issues as far as anything goes with regards to suggestions here, I would like to here about the best of the best. I probably wont spend quite as much as your "Jellyfish" in custom PC costs but I am perfectly prepared to spend up to 7k on this rig quite happily, as long as the components, build and after sales warranty/support is right.

CPU : I would like the intel i7 975 extreme edition. I realise that this is paying a lot of extra money for a tiny reward but I have decided on this, fully watercooled

Motherboard : I have no real idea on this so please feel free to suggest, I have been recommended by a couple of people to go for the Asus P6T Deluxe V2.

Memory : This is a bit different from all the configs on your website but I have my heart set on 12GB and pretty much wont budge from this. I realise this makes the overclock a bit harder and will limit the speed I can overclock to but can you do this for me? I would like the highest quality and fastest memory I can get for this

Video Cards : I would like Dual Watercooled 5870s. These are brand new I know, and the watercooled versions have not even hit the builds yet right? So I might have to wait a couple of weeks, but will you be able to do this for me when they arrive?

Storage : I would like a 256GB SSD for the main drive, then at least 2TB of storage on other tradional hard drive(s)

Optical Drives : A dual setup, the main one to be a blu ray rewriter

Sound Card : Unsure about this, I would like a very high quality one but I have been warned off the Creative range due to bad drivers and instablity for windows vista/windows 7 - any recommendations?

Speakers/Monitor : I dont need these as I have them already, all the budget is to be spent on the actual PC.

Overclocking : Seeing as I would like a fully watercooled system with the best intel processor available I have come to realise it would be silly not to let you guys overclock it some. However above all the system must be completely stable and not be prone to ANY crashing. With 12GB of memory I also hear it may be limited what can be done, I will let you guys tell me what you can do with it?

PSU : Leccy bills dont matter, its just money anyway, a high quality PSU capable of safely powering everything under full load is required, no skimping here.

Extras I woud like : Kinda normal stuff like, lots of USB ports, bluetooth, a wireless access point, a flash media writer, a nice display on the tower showing temperature etc allowing me to control that sort of thing from there, a WIRED keyboard and mouse (NOT Wireless - this is important!), good headset for skype etc, if it looked cool that would be pretty sweet, some nice lighting effects and views through the side of the case. Oh and to be as near to completely silent as possible is a big want also.

OS. Windows 7 Ultimate (Yeah, I want ultimate version plz)

And some nice warranty options would be good also..

Thanks for reading this thread, apologies if I am not very clued up on this - I am looking forward to listening to your recommendations or hearing what you can build for me...

    POKER IS FUN.

Well if you have that kind of money to blow, you came to the right place.

Here is a top spec Black Widow Extreme, which meets most of your requirements, and will set you back a mere £6,000, including a 4 year warranty

I recommend you check out the 30" Dell Monitor which will bring it to a nice round £7k. Job done?

    Hi,

Thanks for the post inter8ection. I was being a doofus with the memory selection right? You can select 12gb of mem by selecting "2" in the drop down menu next to the 6gb option on one of the memory choices right?

Nice spec you did for me, it looks great. I would probably need a bigger PSU tho am I right? I notice the watercooling option is not for the HD5870 but for another make also, although it must be soon the watecooling option arrives for 5870s yeah?

I doubt my opinion will be wanted "that" much here, but purely as a third party, the jelly fish is an incredible machine and would keep you at the detail levels on games for a fair few years + it looks absolutely incredible

That's me, I should charge scan commision. Maybe throw a nice blu-ray drive in the pc you are building me just teasing.

You've heard most of my views and opinions already, inter8ection has already provided a spec and scan are on the case so I won't say too much.

I'd change a few things on inter8ections spec, they are.

    CPU: Intel i7 975 Extreme 3.33GHz 6.4GT s QPI @ 4.0Ghz+ with 20% OC

you need to ask scan what sort of numbers they can get overclocking with 12GB of ram with a 920 and a 975 so you can make an informed decision on weather to get a 920 or 975. The difference is about £500 and the performance might only be a few percent.

    System Drives: 2x256GB Corsair Storage Solutions (Read 220MB s Write 200MB s), RAID0
Thats 1000 pounds of ssd's, I'm not convinved it's worth going for 2 ssd's in raid. Also worth asking scan about your database on the ssd, I'm not sure if they will know the answer or not, my gut as you know tells me it's fine.

    Storage Drives: 2x1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 7200rpm 32MB Cache, RAID0
May as well go with 2 or 3 x 1.5TB rather than 1TB, the cost difference is almost irrelevent in a system like this. I wouldn't raid 0 your storage drives either as you are doubling your risk of losing everything and the small performance you gain isn't worth it especially on storage drives.

Wireless Adaptors: Edimax EW-7728In 300Mbps Wireless PCI Adaptor
Not sure if you will want that or not, probably not.

but otherwise his spec is perfect. Probably wouldn't hurt to go with the 1kw psu but it's not necessary.

Nothing to worry about there, it's just a badly labled config option.

Hey Noggin, I didn't say it was a good idea to spend £7000, but it was sure fun trying

[EDIT] I still thinking it's worth going RAID0 for faster storage, and backup to NAS or eSATA. Yes, I think RAID0 on the SSD's will give you more speed, as well as giving you a logical 500GB SSD system drive, but you're probably going to hit the SATA II limit.

Whilst the Asus P6T V.1 was the overclockers choice the V.2 doesn't seem to be overclocking as well. The Rampage board I think is the overclockers choice at the moment althrough our build department may have some other ideas about it for you.

More than 3 sticks we've been seeing some limitations with 2000mhz memory. The 1800Mhz memory in a 6 stick solution seems to be performing far better so personally i'd go with that currently.

Sound Card : Unsure about this, I would like a very high quality one but I have been warned off the Creative range due to bad drivers and instablity for windows vista/windows 7 - any recommendations?
Assuming you'll be needing gaming audio features then the only real other choice is Asus Xonar range.

For what it's worth, if you want a discrete gaming soundcard I think Creative is still your only option. I have no experience with the Xonar range, but browsing their forums indicates driver support is patchy and you should be very careful about which Xonar card you choose. In particular, if you want EAX support rather than OpenAL Creative is still the only game in town.

When I first used Vista x64, Creative's drivers were definitely sub par (sound problems, crashes etc) but they have improved considerably. I'm not a power gamer but I've not seen any problems recently - at least on 64 bit Vista. I've got an Audigy 4 rather than an X-Fi, but the situation should be the same. I also run the 'modded' creative drivers, but that's more to enable the Dolby Digital over optical functionality that is disabled by default in the Audigy drivers (but not in X-Fi).

If you don't care about EAX, there's always the onboard chipset!

    Thanks guys,

I think I will go with the creative sound card then, and the motherboard you suggest.

Pete : Thanks for the tip re the memory. I have been told roughly the same thing about the memory from someone else at scan except they recommend the 1600 mem instead of your recommendation of the 1800. I have no idea about this so I wll go with what you say, but could I get some clarification on it from you guys? Which will be more stable - 1600 or 1800?

Asus cards are alittle behind creatives in games, But kinda make up for it by owning Creative in HD Media/surround sound, atleast thats the jist of the reviews i've seen.
