    Help with RMA question

I bought an XFX 7900GT extreme edition on 30th April 2006. It has finally sucumbed to the problems with artifacting (playing Command & Conquer 3) that have been previously well documented all over the net. Disabling SM3.0 and dropping clock & memory speeds to stock GT speeds (450 & 1320) have not rectified the problem.

It is still within scan's 1 year warranty period, and XFX offer a 2 year warranty for UK customers.

The question is, should I RMA to scan or XFX?

The reason I ask, I'd rather have it exchanged for another card of equivalent capability without the reputation for poor reliability to prevent me any further grief in future.

Seeing as 7900GTs are no longer to be found anywhere, would scan exhange it for an equivalent card, or do you have stock of 7900GTs that I would be lumped with? Would XFX be my best bet for a swap?

PS. I can supply screen dump of the problem if you like.

    Thanks.

I believe you have to contact Scan's technical support first, they try and solve your problem via a semi-standardised checklist, then they take you through the RMA process (whether it's direct to them, or whether you have to contact the manufacturer first)

Thanks for the reply. Technically speaking, I can RMA to either party. Within the first year, it should be scan, but after that it would be XFX. I can easily wait a week for the first year to pass.

As for running through a checklist, I already did that with XFX when the card was about a month old. They advised me to tweak the memory speed which appeared to remedy the problem (for about 11 months anyway). I forgot to add that to my post last night.

The reason I ask the question is when the whole 7900GT saga kicked off about a year ago, many advised RMAing direct to the manufacturer, as RMAing to the retailer would normally result in receiving another defective 7900GT.

I know that scan don't show any stock of these cards, however I recently RMA'd a bad DVD-RW drive and received a replacement of the identical model, even though these were no longer shown as being stocked.

Ultimately I would like a replacement card that is not a 7900GT with Samsung memory.

I'll hold off until I hear from scan before raising an RMA.

If you raise the issue you're having scan may credit your account for a replacement card. But I'm just guessing after having worked in customer service before the customer is ALWAYS right lol.

It's annoying when someone put their wood block in the dishwasher and it had swollen up from the water / heat and they sent it back and we had to issue them a replacement anyway. (Our company had a no faff policy)

I had the same problem November last year, I went through another 2 7900's (1 the same and 1 which was a upgraded one) and in the end because they did not stock them any more the gave me a free upgrade to another model

Oh and I think if you sent it to XFX they would upgrade you to another card, as I've seen on other forums

@ Mad Max - thanks - that's exactly what I wanted to know. What model did they give you?

Currently going through the motions with scan. XFX still haven't responded to the "ticket" I raised on their support system on Sunday!
