i much prefer the G5, i dont know how i tolerated having the forward button on the right side for so long, now i can actually hold the mouse and not accidentally press forward by mistake!

the teflon pads make it glide and its got a much better textured feel to it compared to the intellimouse. i dont use the adjustable sens as much as a proper gamer might, but i can see where it comes in handy. not bad for photoshop work as well.

i find the weight cartridge a godsend though, i was used to the intellimouse's weight feel, tried a few other mice which i couldnt get along with but i've found a weight i'm happy with now.

This is my buying strategy for most stuff - go in shops and find the one that fits your needs, then buy it online where they knock up to 50% off the price. High street shop prices are just ridiculous.

And I personally use the MX518 mouse on a high sensitivity so I don't have to move my hand much, my wrist sits still on the desk and my fingers / hands can move the mouse. Hasn't caused me any pains yet . It's also not stupidly expensive, has back / forward buttons for IE (priceless) and a slightly more gimmicky alt tab kind of button.

It has been ergonomically designed to fit the shape of your hand so it should be more comfy. I and others who I know who own one have no complaints.

Having said that, I've never experienced hand pains with any mouse, maybe up your sensitivity a bit so you don't have to move your hand all over the place? And you can buy mousemats with gel wrist rests which are very comfy (but ultimately, annoying if you like lots of space for your arms like me lol).
