I bought all the components for a new computer at the beginning of the month, including 2 hard drives and a DVD rewriter. First of all I noticed I was getting RAID errors and problems booting up because of one of the disks, I did a fair bit of testing so I could be sure it was the disk to the point where I worked out the exact conditions for the error: large write operations followed by a reboot caused the drive to make noises and not be detected properly. I then sent the hard drive back to scan where they found no fault with it. After a phonecall and some emails they let me have a refund for the hard drive minus the cost of them collecting it (£15 + VAT). I then ordered the exact same hard drive from www.overclockers.co.uk, the problem then disappeared completely.
Right after I the hard drive had been collected my DVD drive stopped reading DVDs, no discernible cause, just stopped working, I tested it in my other computer: same problem. So I sent it back, scan found a fault with it and sent me a replacement. Then after about 5 days the same thing happened to that DVD drive, so I sent that one back too, asking if I could either have a different model or a refund. They found the fault, after I had been notified of that I sent an email asking them to confirm I'd either be getting a refund or a different model. Before I got a reply the replacement arrived, it wasn't the different model, it was the same model. I then received a reply to my email stating I should be getting the replacement model I'd asked for and it should be with me on that day. It would have been funny, only it wasn't. So in the hopes this one would work I installed it. It didn't work at all, to the point where I thought I'd been sent the one that I'd sent back. I tried it in 2 different computers, different cables, different everything: it didn't work. I also had 2 other people in the room who saw it didn't work so I'm fairly sure I wasn't hallucinating. So I phoned scan, they assured me I'd get the different model and it was collected last Friday.
In the meantime I've been using my housemate's DVD drive, which is also a SATA one, and it's been working fine for 5 days now with me using it for ripping about 30 CDs, playing games etc.
Scan got back to me today: no fault found.
So now I suspect I'll have to once again pay for the collection of a product I know to be faulty, possibly the cost if getting it tested as well, which I think will come to more than twice the price of the drive. If that happens I honestly don't think I will ever shop at scan again, and I don't think anyone else in the same position would either. Customer service is great, I used to recommend scan to people because of it, but I now have a complete lack of faith in the returns department.
