Installed the Xonar in my new i7 build from you guys and had plenty of funy static / cutting out randomly on anything I tried (even basic MP3s). Assumed it was drivers and updated them. Helped a little, but still noticeable sound issues on the desktop. Thought I'll give a game a test.
Fired up Eve and started flying around in my internet spaceships doing serious internet spaceship things and then the sound vanishes. About 20 seconds later the system reboots....Not a good sign as I'd only built this new i7 from you guys yesterday.
Everything was at stock (and will remain that way, it's a fairly mission critical machine) so I do the obvious....check for lose connections, make sure I've not secured the heat-sink wrong....all fine.
Power it on....starts up for about a second then powers off. So most likely to be the PSU (although it's a good unit) or a mobo/case short I think. Take out the expansion cards (The Xonar and TV card) and give it another shot and it boots. Lovely
System starts and runs fine, passes Linpack and all other tests.
Not wanting to have the machine off for any longer than it already was (had some very important 3D rendering to do), I decide to give them a shot in the fileserver (A nice little 939 system thanks to the gent that is Lee ).
TV card goes in - fine. Windows sees it, asks for drivers. Power down and out it comes.
Xonar goes in - POST takes a bit longer than normal....boots Windows....locks up just as loading the desktop.
Power it down and think I'll try once more to not risk a NFF. STUPID idea.....*pop* and a nasty smell that filled the room (honestly, it's revolting ). The lights on the back of the card dim and I get an absolute ghastly clicking sound from it (it has relays inside, so I assume it is those) and system powers down by itself
So found the culprit...super.
Take Xonar out.....hit the power button....dead Check the fuse and it's fine. Green light on the mobo (also ASUS) is on....still nothing. Not sure if it's killed the mobo or PSU I put in a test PSU I have about - beep! POST tone comes through.
So one dead Xonar and my own PSU that is out of warranty....gutted
I brought this over the phone so can I still RMA it online?
