Samsung and Crucial SSD vs Intel??

The intal 80GB hard drive is very popular, but apart from size are these two samsungs/crucial plagued with problems that the intel is not? even very slow writes after heavy load.. and trim? or are these corrected on these versions?

any reason they are not as popular as the Intel?

    64GB Samsung, SSD, PB22-J MLC-Flash, 2.5", 1 x SATA 3Gb/s, Read 220MB/s, Write 200MB/s

    64GB Crucial M225, MLC-Flash, 2.5" SATA 3Gb/s SSD, Read 250MB/s, Write 200MB/s, 64MB Cache

The intel drive's destroy the competition on random writes - and this is crucial for an OS drive (intel worked this out) - it's by orders of magnitude versus the competition too. Most sites recommend the intel drives for this reason, and they now also have TRIM support (the gen 2 drives anyway). Sequential reads/writes look great in marketing material but in real life your OS drive does very little of this.

i would forget about all three and look at OCZ

Re: Samsung and Crucial SSD vs Intel??

Intel is still the cream of the crop. Yes Indlinix will give you higher writes, but only in sequential reads, which is nigh on useless for real life situations. Intel's drives will hit their quoted speeds very aggressively and Indlinix will melt away in random read/writes. Oh yeah, and most if not all SSD manufacturers suck at firmware (Crucial rofl) except Intel, who delivered an amazing firmware update right on time.

Yeah I've read it multiple times before making my decision on which SSD to choose. For those who don't want to read the 25 pages of SSD analysis, he sums it up in his final conclusion:

"Is Intel still my overall recommendation? Of course."

Re: Samsung and Crucial SSD vs Intel??

I'm getting ready to build a new rig in December or early next year (trying to see if GT300, 5870X2 or 5890 and improvements in SSDs make it worth while). I too had read the Anandtech articles and it had well nigh sold me on the Intel drive. If you check out their latest update to the SSD saga though, they start to back away from the Intel drive as being the best. Sorry for the long'ish quote but I think it's highly pertinent to this thread:

    from anandtech.com /storage/showdoc.aspx?i=3667&p=8
    -----------------
While I appreciate that Intel improved sequential write speed a bit in the 160GB G2 drives, the heavy trace results show us that it’s not enough. The improvement to the 160GB G2 is tremendous, over 20%. But that only brings the 160GB G2 up to the performance of the Corsair P256 (Samsung RBX). The real winner here is the Indilinx based OCZ Vertex. At nearly 700 IOPS it has the right balance of random and sequential read/write speed for our heavy usage scenario. To quote from the Relapse:

“When I started writing this article I took a big step. I felt that Indilinx drives had reached the point that their performance was good enough to be considered an Intel alternative. I backed up my X25-M, pulled it out, and swapped in an OCZ Vertex drive - into my personal work system. I've been using it ever since and I must admit, I am happy. Indilinx has done it, these drives are fast, reliable (provided that you don't upgrade to the latest firmware without waiting a while) and are good enough.”

This is more than good enough, this is faster than Intel.

Unfortunately Intel has assured me that there’s no additional write speed left on the table for the X25-M G2. We’ll have to wait for the G3 next year to see that addressed.

    -----------------

Additionally, they don't include the new Crucial M225 drives in their comparison. In contrast, Bjorn3D did a nice review of this drive and liked it better than the Intel. Since I'm a new poster it won't let me type in the URL but go to bjorn3d site then after the .com in the URL type /read.php?cID=1651&pageID=7407

Unfortunately I haven't been able to get a really good comparison between the two. I've heard driver support from Crucial can be bad so that's another factor, although that's just hearsay, don't quote me on it.

For now though they seem to be my top two contenders. And if you take the latest Anandtech advice that the OCZ Vertex is the real winner, that brings me to three top contenders. Of course, with Intel G3 coming out next year, I'm sure I'll have an even harder time making the decision if I postpone it that long. Any thoughts?

apart from the last firmware update from Intel that bricked their drives?

I seem to remember they've also had problems before on that front. To be fair the drive itself is excellent for an OS.

    Or at least mine.. was.

Yeah, it's had some pretty ace reviews, but there's no getting away from the fact that they've managed to brick some of their customer's drives.
I'd like to know what they're doing about those bricked drives, are they repairing/replacing them?

'was'? Has your SSD been bricked by the software?

I'm not sure yet - i've updated, and booted once into windows (which then reinstalled the drive) and shut down. Apparently corruption and SMART errors occur thenafter and i haven't turned it back on yet to find out!

Well i've no choice really but I'll definitely try and backup the data so that i can image to a mechanical stop gap drive should corruption then occur once i do reboot to windows.

So what I'm hearing is you guys still think the Intel drive is best? Notwithstanding the brick'ing issue, the recent Crucial M225 stellar reviews, and most importantly, the former godfather of Intel recommendations (anandtech) has gone back and said they're not good enough anymore?

To be fair, Anandtech don't say that at all...

On the last page, they actually say The easiest way to decide continues to be to buy the largest drive you can afford. 64GB? Indilinx. 80GB? Intel? 128GB? Indilinx and 160GB Intel

Re: Samsung and Crucial SSD vs Intel??

True. It's weird they would list the X25 160GB drive as their top choice at the end, as you reference, but not really say that anywhere else in the review, and in fact say, to the contrary, that some of the newer mainstream SSDs now are faster than Intel. I guess just comparing it to past reviews where they unequivocally indicated their sheer delight with and superiority of the Intel drive, this time around you really don't get that sense at all. But meh. I guess end of the day, the Intel, Crucial, and OCZ are all going to improve performance substantially if you're moving from platters to flash.
