Asus P5LD2-VM SE mobo for Core2Duo?

On the Asus product page (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=434318), the chipset is listed as i945G.

However, on the E6400 page (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=430632) it says
Important: Intel's new Core 2 Duo are only compatible with Intel 975X, 965 Chipset based motherboards.
Is this just an over-generalisation or is this mobo incompatible with Core2Duo processors?

Also, the Asus is listed as 1-2 days leadtime. Is this generally accurate or a standard line for all items out of stock?

I'm a little concerned though as the Asus website has a download for a BIOS version to "support new CPUs". Does this indicate that there will be boards out there that won't support Core 2 Duo without a BIOS update?

Could someone from Scan confirm whether these boards will support Core 2 Duo out of the box?

    Much appreciated.

Am I the only one who thinks these boards may be the cheapest way into a Core 2 Duo system? Particularly attractive in my case as I'm building a Linux PC and this chipset (i945) isn't bleeding edge and therefore likely to be supported by existing Linux distributions.

Yup there are some good reasons for going with boards like this, not least price

Of course, the older chipsets cant handle the sky high FSB speeds needed for a good overclock, so thats one thing you wouldnt be looking to these baords for hehe.

Problem with the cheaper boards is that they are useless for overclocking...........and a stock Conroe would be...........well..........stock

If I had the money I'd go for an overclocked X6800 system built by someone else and delivered by playboy centrefolds. I'm not sure what your point is?
