That nvidia 7600 passively cooled card looks great!

Will have to upgrade to PCI express soon!

I was wondering if another option would be to buy a stock card, but then to fit a heatpipe and have the actual heatsink outside the back of the case?

Would that be possible, or am I being stupid?

Would be possible, just very hard and likely very expensive, for what would ammount to little benifit, upgrade to a standard heatpipe replacement, or upgrade to watercooling.

DigiGuru, what you are describing is both technically sound in principal, and actually in production in fact. Check out Zalman's TNN systems such as this one. But as Golden Dragoon quite rightly says, these are expensive.
The problem comes I suppose with doing after the event, ie taking a normal case and then putting the heatsink on the outside. You'd certainly either need long heatpipes, possibly with some degree of movement / angling options, or you'd need to use some drilling skills.
Still, it's got me thinking that it would be possible.
