I know the price of the X2 3800 is pretty good, but I still think a lower end Conroe (Allendale to be exact) would be better value, especially in the long run. Its performance as seen in the Anadtech benches are amazing:

    http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets...oc.aspx?i=2795

Depends on what upgrade you are looking for i guess, extreme budget but already on a 939 system, id go for the X2 3800. Anything older, id dish out for Conroe, a fair few cheap mobos about too!

    Kompletts prices look fantastic too:

    E6300 1.86GHz £125
    E6400 2.13GHz £150
    E6600 2.4GHz £220
    E6700 2.67GHz £355

    All including VAT!

I swear the E6600 was £215 yesterday. Looks like a lot of people have been ordering and they've pushed up the price. Its very tempting to get the E6600 but the most I've ever spent on a processor is £50, so I think the E6300 will be the one for me. Only thing I'm worried about is the multiplier on the E6300 which is a bit low and may limit my overclocks.

It definitely was £215 - now £220 - I guess the start of a worrying trend up to next Monday's release date? Presumably the pre-order price can't come down or those who've already pre-ordered will cancel and re-order...

So long as they are around sensible £220 levels when they are available that'll be ok...

    Now roll on more motherboards!

Dont forget to factor in £6.50 for postage, so youre looking at £226ish for the 6600. Im a little disappointed i didnt snatch one up when it was £215, okay, only a fiver less, but a saving is a saving!

Given the performance of these Conroes the prices sure are respactable...
As for Conroe, if you still have an AGP card ( I have a 6800gt agp), then you only currently can go for 1 mobo, by ASRock (Asrock 775Dual-VSTA I believe), using the via chipset...credit to Asrock for producing this board. Performance is somewhat under the "native" Conroe mobos, but its an option nonetheless.

The fact that the mid range Conroes are comparable to the FX62, a CPU costing around £600, makes the prices very palatable. Seems as if I'm the only person on the planet that's after one cause they're cool, quiet and low powered. Everyone wants to oc them!

The big issue is that for users out there still with AGP (especially 6800GT's) and DDR memory. The upgrade will be memory, motherboard, graphics card and CPU. Which if you are going to get a decent graphics card to work with an E6600, you are not going to get much change from £700.

Would a more powerful but Cheaper X2 be better in the shorter term (if you already have AMD socket 939) untill the quad cores come out early in 2007 along with Direct X 10 cards and Vista? Its not to far off. I'm still trying to decide the pros and cons.

Id just be worried about mobo's. From what ve read there aren't any decent one's out yet.

AMD price cuts on there X2 range, are pretty impressve.

You can now get the X2 4600+ for 170quid, just havin a quick look at komplett.

Theres quite a few decent ones, the problem is most of them are rather expensive.
However, some of the latest 965 models to appear for sale are quite reasonably priced and look quie the part....i think given a couple of weeks the market will mature considerably, which is why im waiting a couple weeks to get my mobo (tho i am thinking i might order my cpu now just incase it takes a while hehehe)

I picked up the gigabyte 965 DS3 motherboard for £95 from Scan (today only offer) which I thought was a good deal since other places were selling them for more than £110, if they even had stock. It is meant to run at a high FSB so I am looking to pair it with an E6300.

I'm looking to base a system build around the E6400 in a couple of months or so, hopefully by then the motherboard market wil get a bit competitive and the prices will settle. I think in around that time will be the optimum time for a build with conroes out properly and the AMD prices slashed.
